Well, this is the topper to a pretty shitty evening for me. Anyone who has read FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS or at least has seen the movie knows that he was the read deal. A man who saw the dark side of Americana and what we as a society really are.

"And that, I think, was the handle - -that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - -on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - -the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."

And to think I actually paraphrased the first line from FEAR AND LOATHING in my new fanfic I'm writing. If you think about it, Thompson would've fitted in perfectly in the FIREFLY verse.

"There he goes. One of god's own prototypes. A high powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die."

"We are all wired into a survival trip now. No more of the speed that fueled that 60's. That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip. He crashed around America selling "consciousness expansion" without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously... All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create... a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody... or at least some force - is tending the light at the end of the tunnel."

"There was only one road back to L.A. U.S. Interstate 15. Just a flat out high spped burn through Baker, Barstow and Berdue. Then onto the Hollywood Freeway, straight into frantic oblivion. Safety. Obscurity. Just another freak in the freak kingdom. We had gone in search for the American Dream. It had been a lame fuck-around. A waste of time. There was no point in looking back. Fuck no, not today, thank you kindly. My heart was filled with joy. I felt like a monster re-incarnation of Horatio Alger. A man on the move. And just sick enough, to be totally confident."

"NO HAI ES BANDAI. THERE IS....NO.....BAND. AND YET....WE HEAR A BAND."

I'm gonna miss him.

"You've just gotta go ahead and change the captain of your brainship, because he's drunk at the wheel."

BARNEYT

I hadn't realised he'd committed suicide! I just heard that he'd died... I'm in shock...
