I didn't have anywhere near the adverse reaction to 'The Village' as most of the critics seem to have. It did require about a big suspension of disbelief, but I treated it like a fairy tale, the message was the important part, not the plausibility of the details.

Note: I may inadvertantly have spoilers below, but am trying to keep them out.

Does anybody know of any communities living historic ways? Preferably not for commercial or cultish reasons. I have always been fascinated by the essential 'survival' skills no longer present among 'civilized' men (myself included).

A childhood friend of mine grew up on a farm and I have to say I always envied him for his breadth of 'useful' skills and knowledge (though he grew up to be a music teacher in an suburban school).

Being allergic to hay and a tad squeamish when it comes to inflicting harm on critters I didn't last long working on a farm myself (back as a teenager, though with the better allergy meds of today, I might have had a chance).

I don't believe that living an agrarian life is the key to moral purity or anything like that. I like technology (my job and many of my hobbies involve computers) but I also object to theories that technology is going to solve our problems, I find most problems result from human failing (that is being of a moral, character or spiritual nature as you prefer) and I strongly believe that 'progress' in terms of our moral character has not kept pace with our other achievements (I don't know think I would go so far as to say it has declined, though it has dipped low from time to time).

I guess I am attracted to the sense of community (odd being a loner myself) that is suggested by tribal and simple agrarian life. I am sure that human nature being what it is, still has that disturbing need to isolate, ridicule, taunt etc. one or more members of the group.

If this whole diatribe is inchoherent or just weir, it just goes to show you that you shouldn't do forums, while suffering a fever.

Hope I made sense,

Arawaen

Well, there's Upper Canada Village in southern Ontario, but it's more of a tourist/educational thing.

There are of course small tribal villages scattered throughout third world areas --some of whom honestly aren't even aware of the outside world (look up the "cargo cult" phenomenon).

The Amnish border the commerical/cultish group too much for my interest. Probably just a prejudice fostered by bad hollywood movies and 'evil' reality tv.

The Amish aren't really all that cultish. Just very simple. And they are given a choice to be Amish or to go into the modern world. There's a certain appeal in the simplicity of the Amish way of life, but I do like my computer.

TGJ: So, your ideal home would be a barn with a computer tucked away in the corner ?
