"Damn yokels, can't even tell a transport ship ain't got no guns on it." - Jayne Cobb

One of those days when you just want push your computer off a bridge straight on to the tracks just as the train's about to go under! ARGGH!!!

Something is half-assed blocking my computer from most sites and even more content. (I don't like restrictions!) As an example FFF.net comes up, but the hosted pics in peoples sigs (like the "Don't Feed The Trolls" one) won't display in IE. Hell, FFF won't at all with Mozilla or Chrome!

-Hulu doesn't load. (COMMUNITY?! NOOOooooo, I missed the beginning!!!)
-My bank's bill pay won't load, which means I can't pay the internet bill. If that goes too long this will all shut down anyways.
-Even Brickset won't load! F***!

I don't know what's causing it – it's either Malwarebytes, Avast, something in Win 7, some piece of malware that hasn't been found by Mal or Ava, or it's My ISP. Or... it's Toth!

It's hard to remember exactly what happened several hours ago. But one theory is that it's all from when I clicked the little button in my bare-bones free version of Malwarebytes and turned it into the "trial" version. MWB has been keeping Avast from even updating itself.

I really don't want to do a system recovery, because through shitty circumstances, I only have one restore point, and if I use it there is a chance that will bring back this piece of Malware that locked up my system even worse.

I would attempt to look for my problem and a possible solution on a more specialized tech site, but I can't get to them.

*Oh right, my computer specs:
- Win 7 Pro, although it's services.exe file has been kidnapped and replaced with an imposter long ago.
-3.1ghz
-4gb Ram
-100kb/sec connection.

*ETA: WTF?! I had to manually tack my sig on the end of this thing.

NEWOLDBROWNCOAT

Here's a thing to try-- maybe-- go into control panel, create another user account, call it Rahl2 or something. It will offer you the choice of what to import to the new user. Import nothing, or as little as possible. Anything you import could link to that malware.

Then log off, shut down, reboot, log on as that new user. See what happens. You MAY have to rebuild all your online user accounts, links, registrations, etc. But try it ( E-T-A: with one account, one site, or just a few.)and see if you get a good result. ( E-T-A: If it works, then consider rebuilding your other accounts, links, etc. It is a LOT of work.)

If it's a problem with your ISP, you won't see any change, but at least you can tell customer support that it'd affecting more than one user. I always keep a backup account on my machine, both at the ordinary account security level-- one I use, the other is just there as backup. I also keep one account as a System Administrator, but don't use it day to day, just when I need to make serious changes or new installations.

I think if I was having these problems, and nothing seemed to help, I would save my important files on a flash drive or something and do a "factory" settings recovery (reboot). It's a pain, but might cleanse your system of whatever junk is messing it up. Hope you can fix it some other way though.
Good luck!

Unfortunately, adding a new admin desktop didn't do anything other than... make another desktop that has the exact same problems.

Sadly, at this point I think Muttski is right, in that the only solution is the final solution. Although, I think I'll try the potentially hellish recovery point first, just in case.

I'll probably try and nuke the rig sometime maybe tomorrow. Until then all the offline stuff still works. The hardest stuff to round up would probably all the game save files and storing them in a way that's easily replantable (not that bad).

Huh, that's weird; Youtube still works. Wonder if any solutions might be there....

BYTEMITE

I used to have MalwareBytes running alongside a Macafee and then the Windows free security thing, and I don't recall that it ever interfered with the other antivirus software or blocked sites.

It's sounds to me like maybe there was a javascript thing that happened that prevented certain pages or images from loading correctly. Perhaps a java update, or a windows update, or for some reason an incompatibility between javascript and add-ons for firefox and chrome such as ad blockers, site blockers, or script blockers.

Let us know if it happens again.

Also, check to make sure your antivirus software settings haven't been changed or turned off, that nothing has changed about your internet connection settings, and that the antivirus software windows that come up when you load your antivirus software aren't fake or redirects.

Here's a follow-up: I eventually did reinstall Windows 7, which did help it perform again as smooth as newborn. Unfortunately, anymore it doesn't let as many programs to be installed on it as before. For an example: I had Baldur's Gate 1 installed - hell, it's still installed in the Window.old Program Files folder - yet now, 'cause it's not playable from the the .old folder, so I tried reinstalling. It gets through most of the 5th CD before it hits some funky error, and stops the install.

While writing this, I thought "Oh, what the hell. I'll just try copying the .old files on top of the normal ones." It didn't work.

I'm gonna try one more time before I give up or declare myself insane.

Windows and "it didn't work" are considered redundant.

My corrupt WinXp system runs 'em just fine. It's just slower.
