Well, I've certainly had worse days...

...I'm referring specifically to yesterday. To explain:

The day before, I got a phone call regarding a job I'd applied for - the same day - in Bradford, a night shift warehousing job (this is signficant because I live in Bolton - several miles away). I was invited to an interview; I immediately thought 'oh, not another one!' - you see, the last "interview" I went to was more of a registration with the employment agency in question, in Sheffield - it cost me £25 to get there (train plus taxi), and I really couldn't afford to keep doing that if it wasn't going to be an interview with the employer proper. Still, you can't afford to ignore chances, either, so I shrugged and went. Actually this one did sound a bit more hopeful, as there had apparently been over 200 applicants and only about 6 or so were being interviewed.

The trip down, though flawless in terms of the trains running on time - in fact, I got into Bradford nearly an hour early and grabbed an impromptu lunch at the station (2 corned beef pasties, very nice) - was a nightmare, at least the Bolton-to-Manchester trip was: more than the usual number of screaming kids. You know the sort: the ones who scream for no real good reason and make infanticide entirely understandable...

Anyway. I got there (£25 again!), I met with the interviewer, filled out the usual paperwork that you do when you sign up with employment agencies (since initially you're working for them, not the employer per se)...and I abruptly had to stop and think because of something he'd said. I suddenly got the impression from the way he was talking that I'd got the job.

And I HAD!!!

I actually asked him: "Hang on...this may sound like an odd question, but have I actually got the job?"

"Oh, yes," he said, "as far as I'm concerned you actually got it yesterday, when we talked on the phone." It took everything I had, every scrap of self-discipline, to prevent my jaw from dropping far enough to shatter on the floor. Two gorram years I've been trying, and I'd finally cracked it!

Apparently this chap is one of the few employers left in the UK who believes that experience, which I have, actually counts for something, as opposed to one who turned me down six months ago because I'd been out of work for 18 months and he had people to pick from who were in paid employment at the time. Never mind that such an attitude on the part of employers will only make the long-term unemployment problem worse.

But I have everything this employer wants, so we're just sorting out details.

Re-sult!!!

Well Done! and congratulations Anonymouse!
I could have had a crappy day as I accidentally double booked clients so saw 7 kids in a row without a break (I'm a speech pathologist who works with preschoolers and their families)...but luckily I was still on a high from yesterday when I found out I am going to be receiving a faculty medal and a university medal when I graduate officially in October...and to top off the good news they were going to ask me to give the speech as the representative of the graduates at the ceremony but I didn't get the message on time...reliefsville as frankly my head is not in a space where I could cope with giving a "life affirming speech in front of my parents ex professors, the university big wigs and 1000 other people.

Well, good for you!

That must surely be a very difficult job, one I can't even imagine doing. I hope it's fun.

And thanks - I'm going to be able to go to more conventions now. Hell, if I can, I'm going to go to a Firefly con in the States!

I actually know how much of a miracle that is, considering I regularly read the UK news...

We just had a old friend call us the other day and say he was busted flat and broke driving halfway across the country to find the possibility of a job...Certainly makes one appreciate being on a winning side of broke...
