Warning! this is another "things kids say" post. Tuesday was my last day at After school care til September. so a number of the kids decided to get all the questions they didn't think they could ask anyone else sorted...lucky me I had a busy afternoon answering them or redirecting them while also dealing with a diversity of I'm-gonna-miss-you behaviours (from clinginess- anger).Any way the most amusing question session went like this: (And I swear I do not make any of this stuff up kids actually talk to me this way)
D (boy aged 11):
"Ah Rose I need to ask you something, but I'm not asking to be stupid, or to make you mad...but it is because of something I saw on South Park so it's probably inappropriate, but I really want to know, but I don't want to get into trouble, and the other staff will just lecture me and not give me an answer".
Me: "Was there a question in there? and please before you answer that...breathe".
D: "what's a (he leans in close and whispers) Metrosexual?"
He looked so serious but I had to laugh which I did coz I knew he'd be cool about it
Me "what do you think it means?"
Him: " A gay person who's like seriously uber gay? no offence though its okay to be gay, even really really gay...but I'm not"
Me: reacting with uncontrolled side splitting laughter
"Okay buddy chum calm down no one thinks you're homophobic. A metrosexual is more or less a guy who looks after himself, wears stylish clothes, has his hair styled, might wear a designer fragrance, doesn't restrict himself to just typically manly interests like sport and beer, might enjoy theatre and fine dining etc etc. a new age man if you will.
D: "Give me an example"
Me: Ummm Rick Castle's kind of a metrosexual in a not to over the top way
D: Coz he dresses sharp and he cooks and has cool hair?
Me: Yeah I guess, But he's like a lot of guys it's become more okay for men to look outside the "what a real man is" box
D:"Yeah...but it must still make some people uncomfortable if they have to come up with a stupid name for it...why do people have to be called gay or metrosexual anyway? It's confusing for kids to work it all out which is a waste of time coz it's dumb anyway"
Me: "I hear ya"

N.B. I used Castle as an E.g. because this particular group of boys are Halo freaks, and when they mentioned Buck was their favourite character on Halo 3 I let em know he also plays Richard Castle so they watch it coz they think he's so damn cool.

Good answer. And Castle was a good example even if he skips the facials :)

That is truly awesome, Boris. I had to laugh at the mental image of the poor kid being so nervous, and your "before you answer that...breathe" response. It's amazing how worked up they get sometimes over things they're dying to know but *think* they might get in trouble for.

"like seriously uber gay?"

I love the things kids say XD

Thanks for sharing, that just made my morning.

Glad it made you laugh. The boy in question is one of my favourites...poor kid is impulsive and often has his foot in his mouth so trouble seems to find him rather regularly. His little brother (2nd grader) is a hoot too. He pretty much ignores or irritates anyone he doesn't regard as suitably evolved and has mastered the art of linguistic code switching for different people. E.G. the other day after they had come in from school he was put on time out by one of my coworkers who asked him why she'd put him on time out. He replied: "Coz I pushed XXXX and you didn't like it" she said "that wasn't very nice was it? why did you do that? he shrugged and she left the area to let him think about his actions. he rolled his eyes looked at me (observing from 3 metres away)and mimicked "That wasn't very nice was it...of course not! It would hardly have the required impact if it was nice would it?"(I gotta tell you the words required impact coming out of a sweet faced seven year old sounds really funny)
I asked him why he shoved the child and he said "because I have a wide personal space bubble...he knows that but he chose to trespass and I reacted and you don't like people in your bubble either so don't laugh"
"That's not why I'm laughing. Anyway have you ever seen me shove anyone?"
"There's different ways of moving people out of your bubble, I'm just not mature enough to know any that don't get you in trouble"
"And you're on a time out as a result"
"do you see anyone in my bubble?"(gets up and uses his arms to demonstrates the size of his 2 metre bubble)
"ah no I don't"
"well then Touche".
he kills me...he'll talk to me and a few others like this and then instantly dumb down for most of the other children and staff and he's not being facetious or patronising It's purely instinctive.

That's amazing. I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face around that kid, which would probably be my undoing beause I'd never be able to punish him if need be XD You work with some awesome kids

If this child is allowed to survive into adulthood, he may end up as a screenwriter.

bun
ETA: the hot shaving cream idea wasn't new -- we've had that one before, though I can't remember specifically.

I do find it hard to keep a straight face, and often fail...I often find myself controlling my laughter when coworkers don't see the funny side of what's happening, but the kids can always pick it when I'm doing that so I have to be careful as it then looks like I'm laughing at my collegues. The kids seem more comfortable saying 'out there' stuff when they are talking to me and the program coordinator (she's a bit on the quirky side and is very open minded like me)than when they are talking to the other staff members. I get a good laugh pretty much every day which makes up for the more challenging behaviour we see in this age group. Its no wonder I can't seem to stop going back to after school care! I can see myself finishing my speech pathology degree and only doing speech pathology on the side.
By the way Flora Bunny, It's possible my young friend may be a screen writer or a director. He often says when he grows up he's going to "do a job where people have to do and say what I want"
