A kind of poll.

I tolerate mine, at the moment.

Love is maybe too strong a word in this instance - but I'm very happy with my job. It could always be improved of course, but in the light of how poor things could be - I'm very fortunate. So happy sums it up.

So why tolrate at the moment 'C' ? What's happened?

My job was just to add income while at school; now I'm out for a semester & that makes my job the only thing I'm doing for a while. Hence the "tolerating."

I'm just wondering if Browncoats are happy in their work overall, or if *work* is inherently unfulfilling for most.

Call it my need to know.

I hate my job but have to tolerate it for now. I ain't about to quit unless something else better comes along, and that is not likely to happen due to the economy...and my age. No one wants to hire a soon to be 60 year old man.

Come midnight you'll have another member of the 50 & over Browncoat Club right here.

And I'm tolerating the job right now because I got my annual review today. I have a very picky boss.

There are sometimes I like it, like when I get to go out in the field. When I'm behind on things, and when I feel like I could be spending my time better or getting more work for work done, I struggle.

I tell myself that it's what I trained for, and I'm really lucky to have a job, and that I'm helping the community, and yeah, there's times when I really enjoy it. But I'm easily distracted, sometimes I don't feel like I'm doing my best, which makes me feel guilty, because again, I intended to do good for the community. And there's sometimes I wish I could be doing something else. Like exclusively commentating on politics, or Firefly, or writing stories.

And getting up at five in the morning and getting home at 6:30 pm sucks. :/

I love my job, but I'm self employed and answer to myself. I have 15 people under me and enjoy the difference in ages and work ethics. But I pick my employees very carefully so as long as we all get along, the workplace is happy. Bring in the wrong person, and it's like driving on a square wheel. I hate the self imposed stress of having the ultimate responsibility of running the business, but after working under other people, I would never have it any other way than I have it now. I have the grey hair to prove the stress levels of self employment though. So be careful what you wish for, you may get it.

Heh, that sounds about like me - although I run a security biz.

I like my job, boss or not, I walk the rounds at Site Three myself, mostly, and I generally don't hafta deal with humans - there's a beauty and glory to the cold dark world out there that so many never see, like when the fresh snow comes down in hard crystals, glittering in the security lights like you're walking on a river of stars, or the rainbows as the flakes blow through the lighted arcs, the interplay of the local animals, like the hilarity of the very aggressive bunnies driving the laid back slacker raccoons out of the park, oh my that was funny...

But yeah, I like what I do, doesn't pay so well, but it's enough to get by on, and that's all I ever really wanted.

I hate my job. It's a crap job. I'm more hopeful when it comes to my actual future career, though sometimes I get a sinking feeling in my stomach when I think about trying to make it.
I graduate soon, and can quit the job I hate. So long as that sinking feeling is wrong, I will start having some better employment experiences.

I love my job ;-) I have had lots of crappy jobs getting here but I teach at a University and it is the best job I have ever had. Somethings suck like all jobs but I feel like it matters and the kids are getting something out of it and I get to spend time with a lot of smart people with interesting ideas. So yeah, it's a good one.

PS. I am also in the "over 50" Browncoat club. I wonder how many of us there are ;-)

Tolerate at best. I don't want to say I hate it, but I don't think I could find a job I love. I just don't like being locked into anything. I want to spend my time the way I want to and nothing I want to do really constitutes a job.

I'm just looking forward to retirement.

Wo! not to be disrespectful, but as a novice 40 year old I'm feeling kinda youngish on this thread :-). Isn't 60 the new 20 now anyway? employers need to get over their ageism. nothing I've hated more in the past than having a younger less experienced person employed above me just because they're younger and have a piece of paper that says they are qualified. what I really hate is when I'm expected to train them so they will be worthy of the position, when I already have the necessary skills.
Our number 2 at work fits this category. she gives pointless directions so we have no choice but to ignore her...then she complains we are undermining her authority. e.g. the other day she removed me from an area where I was observing some challenging older kids that were obviously scheming something. she asked me to supervise a new but experienced staff member who was supervising little kids doing basic craft. I said no as it was unnecessary and I needed to get back outside to redirect any silliness from older kids. She threatened to report me. I said I had more pressing concerns (what I actually said while smiling sweetly was " Good luck with that, If you don't mind I have to get back outside before something regrettable occurs)...unfortunately my evil-doers had taken advantage of my absence and had exposed a green ant's nest. They were jumping up and down on it to annoy the ants( the idea being that they would get bitten and get to go home). Funnily enough I was not the staff member put on report that day, and she was firmly reminded to assume the senior staff positioned themselves according to the greatest needs of the children and the program. I refuse to get "formal" qualifications for a job I've been doing successfully for more than 20 years.

It's not and never has been what you can do, rather what a "certification" says you can do.
Just look at Dubya, graduate of a good school who tanked every place he worked.

I used to like my job.
Then ownership and management changed and I really liked it. The owner had another company so we never saw him.
Then the management left and ownership sent someone who thinks he's in charge. He's a young 'un who thinks he can do anything because he's the bosses son and can tell us what to do in our job (which is an industry he knows nothing about).
I currently tolerate my job.
We are supoosed to be moving location this year to put everything under one roof. From what I've heard I think I'll be hating my job at the point.

But you never know. Positive thoughts and all that.
If not here's hoping for a lottery win.

I like my job. After a year of unemployment, any job would be welcome so I took a job flagging traffic.

When most people see the folk standing at the side of the road holding the stop sign, they see a dead end job/can't do anything else for a living situation.

Couldn't be further from the truth.

I have a one inch thick manual I have to follow when it comes to setting up safe work zones. I can have OSHA show up on my job site and if the traffic control isn't up to what they think it should be, as the Crew Chief, I'm the one the inspector is going to write up for several thousand dollars worth of fines.

The crews we work with (Mostly utility... Power and phone) rely on us to keep them safe.

My company pays the best in the state (I make $13 an hour) and I get the extra benefit of being able to bring the company truck home every night so I don't have to put my own gas money into my car to get to work.

And, I must be doing a god job. I've been with them for 8 months, been a Crew Chief for three and a half months and I just picked up my new company truck this afternoon. a just purchased, 2002 Chevy S-10 4x4.. and it's loaded with only 62,000 miles on it. My old truck had over 125,000 miles, was a 4x2 and was basically a beater.

My Supervisor is the best I have ever had. She knows her stuff. And instead of yelling at you if you make an error, she asks you why you did something and then makes suggestions as to how to improve your set up.

The only drawback lately is that the Job I've been working the last month and a half requires me to get up at 4 am to be on the job site by 7 am. It's a 180 mile round trip from home to work and back. I've been working parts of the state of VT that I've never been to and I've lived here all my life (43 years)

I've had more rewarding jobs (professionally and financially) and I've had much worse jobs but for the moment, I'm happy where I am.

Doing a "Discover Scuba" 2 hour class Saturday March 6 at a local pool. I don't know if I'll get certified or just have fun for 2 hours.

In replying to my own post I'd just like to add that I won't be hating my job as I now have no job to hate. I was made redundant today (along with another guy in the other building) as they can't afford to keep everyone on. That leaves about 5 peeps in their part and 3 peeps in my bit and they have all gone on short hours.
And I won't get any redundancy money coz when we changed ownership we got money then and a new contract.

sucks!!
