My Wife just got a wrecka playah for Mothers Day, and I swear, the notes I hear coming out of it beat the piss outta CD's...I'm not kidding.
Anyone else notice that?

Okay, either I had exceptionally shitty audio equipment when I was younger (likely), or digital really brings some stuff out that I never heard before (possible), or a combination of both - but I hear far more with my iPod hooked up through our large audio system at work - or running through my car stereo - than I ever got with my old vinyl albums.

It's almost like listening to it with the benefit of Paul Harvey's new "Bong" marijuana-smoking device...

I think vinyl just brings out different notes, not necessarily more...but I DO heat lots of notes in stuff (soundtracks to STTMP, Superman TM) that I haven't heard since I was a kid.

And how do those notes sound once they're heated?

Technically speaking, Analog does produce more notes, which are clearer. As long as the medium is well maintained, and played on a good audio system, will always sound better than digital audio playing on the same system. And audio off a mp3 player or iPod will be even worse, due to compression.

However, differences between analog and digital is harder to hear in newer recordings, because there was no analog original, it's digital from the start, which means deficiencies transfer to any analog reproductions, as well.

The biggest problem with the vinyl records was the physical contact of needle to plastic, causing wear. Many players had heavy needle weight/drag, and would dig a groove into the sound track. A higher end stereo system turntable would have a lighter stylus weighting, higher skip setting, and could could expose the notes originally placed in the sound groove.
Static was also a problem, as was physical damage - cuts in the vinyl face, heat damage/warping.
Junk like ipod, 8-track, and mp3 are not, and never have been, in the ballpark.

Nothing personel guys, but I never CHANGED over to them(iPod etc) because of the "tinny" sound they have, could not stand it. I saw the other day that several new bands are releasing on vinyl instead of CD's or MP3's, due to the fact....wait for it
YOU CAN"T DOWNLOAD IT!

I really miss the nice big booklets in the albums, with words and pictures,...compare that to the tiny 3x3 booklet.

It's kind of a trade-off. In pristine condition vinyl sounds worlds better than digital. BUT digital is a million times easier to maintain. It's one reason I love indie bands that offer their albums on vinyl with a free digital download included.

IIRC part of the problem 'back in the day' was the distributors making the vinyl albums as thin and cheap as they could, hoping to make their money in sales volume, and towards the end there, the quality was getting to be pretty bad and the records even harder to take care of.
Now, HiFi aficionados, have carved out a niche for themselves, and the few places that still make records are making them well, and buying excellent systems to play the records with.
Teens and folk that are living a "highly mobile" lifestyle are much better off with digital media for its reduced size, durability and portability. More settled people may indeed enjoy the enhanced sound quality (our ears are analog devices, just like the records are) available on good vinyl. If you can find the music you want, recorded in an analog studio...

One reason I kept all my good LPs.

And speaking of 'Album art', I still have my BEATLES Magical Mystery Tour LP, which came complete w/ a pull out photo mag of the Fab 4.

I still play my old Vinyl records on my well maintained 1970's Sanyo portable record player. they sound better to me than Digital stuff or CD's....then again that could be the nostalgia effect.

Yup, I've still got all my old vinyl - well over a thousand albums. Haven't heard any of them in over 20 years... I'm thinking about picking up one of the little USB turntables and software to rip the vinyl to MP3.

Well. I'm only 20...so I pretty much missed all this stuff, and only have now what my parents have managed to hang on to for all these years (which isn't much, due to many reasons, along with the fact that when they came to Australia, they didn't have room to bring their whole record collection.)

But I'll tell you one thing.

Disraeli Gears.
The sound, the cover art, everything about that LP is brilliant.

The reason for this is that record players are analog and they follow the entire sound wave while cd players are digital and only hit certain parts of the sound wave along the sound wave so their sound tends to lack the full range of the original. On the other hand, while a record player will give amazing sound on the first play, its own quality will degrade quickly due to the affects the needle has on the record, and cds will sound pretty much as they did new for the life of the cd.

I've been thinking exactly the same. Looked at a couple, but not made any sort of a move to get one yet. " A guy I know " - one of those who knows everything - says I should be able to rig up my old turn table to my computer and copy to MP3s that way. Maybe when I've got time to tinker w/ such things, I'll get around to doing it.
