My cat does not chase mice or birds...this is kind of a good thing as we have alot of native birds visiting the garden. the mouse thing is not so hot as they think they can live in the house, and the cat agrees with them. he only hunts humans and other cats....oh yeah and invisible things. the other day I watched as he stalked, pounced on and killed something I could not see. I know all cats do this, but he actually came over to me and presented me with the invisible prey and was quite proud of himself. I backed away in feigned disgust to see what he would do, and he picked it upi and put it at my feet after giving whatever it was a quick lick...I hope it wasn't a fairy. Also a few times we've come home late and seen him sitting in the driveway palying with another cat...the other night we found out it was actually a rabbit not a cat, which made sense as he hates other cats.

America loves a winner!

Cats being cats. I think , if there are other dimensions or what not, that cats are the only ones to see them. And they think WE'RE weird because we don't see what they see.

It's a theory I have.

He is rather cute...he has to be to make up for all the stuff he does that is unendearing ( ie spraying, biting, stealing, attacking anyone wearing shorts challenging me for territory every three month or so etc etc etc) I have to say I agree with the theory that cats can see an extra dimension...I pity the creatures of that dimension as I can't do anything to save them from his wrath.

Well, then it's a theory you share with my dearly-departed mother...and me, when you get right down to it. This was a view she held as far back as I can remember, and was apparently bolstered somewhat by some mythology put forth in Clifford Simak's book, City. She referred to these extra-dimensional wossnames as "cobblies", though I think it's just as likely that they're red Lectoids (LectRoids?) from Planet 10. Any time one of my cats plays with, kills, or simply stares intently at something I can't see, I'm thinkin' cobblies/Lectoids.

It's as good a theory as any I got.

Boris - sounds like your cat has personality...and personality goes a long way. I hope, when you do finally start getting complaints from the local faerie community, that a peaceful resolution can be reached quickly.

I inherited a fixed tom, T.K., from Mom. Even by cat standards this cat was something...special. Was rude and objectionable to the cat I already had (fixed female), and sprayed EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME, 24/7, in stereo. A couple of folks I know who claim genuine Old World cat knowledge told me they didn't know why a fixed male would be doing that in a house with a fixed female. Never did get to the bottom of it, and unfortunately I didn't have to - after about 6 months of this, one day T.K. tried to cross the street one too many times and went to live with Jesus. He was a neat cat in many ways - particularly those ways which didn't involve spraying my dresser and desk - and I miss him...though not as much as I might have otherwise.

I actually agree with you. I've got the same theory - only in mine, "crazy people" are actually seeing those other dimensions as well. It came to me when watching a Buffy ep, where Spike has his soul and is talking to Willow - only no one else but Spike can SEE Willow, so he appears to be carrying on conversations with nobody.

We had a cat that sprayed... he did better when we allowed him access to the outside regularly

Too true, that did help. Though sadly, in T.K's case, it turned out to be a rather final solution...

I think you need to cut off your cat's supply of catnip. Stage an intervention.

Theodore is also "fixed" but obviously in denial. he sprays everything inside and out...but I think he's doing it for the family/pack, as none of us can and there are plenty of other pesky cats around who don't get the rules (i.e. the dominant cat in the area...that is my cat, is the sprayer of the territory). he only started doing it after I moved back in so I think there's a psychological component. at least he is kind enough to retract his claws when we are play fighting. my old cat went for blood. I have diminished sensation on most of my finger tips due to his habit of ripping them open just for the fun of it. He also once pearced my ear lobe, and ripped through my tongue. I miss the little bugger despite the violence factor.

regarding the "crazy people" seeing a different dimension, I know quite a few Autistic kids i've worked with over the years have led me to believe they can see it too. I know sometimes I get inklings of things from "beyond" little shadows and images here and there and sometimes faint outlines of figures ( i don't know if they are humanoid).

Animals sense a lot of things we aren't aware of. Anyone who's ever seen a cat freak out before a storm or hiss at a complete stranger whom you know to be evil but they haven't met can tell you that. Cats are amazing animals and have taught me alot over the years.

That being said, I did have a cat one time who wasn't quite right. He was fixed, but not as far as he was concerned. His name was Rasputin, and he used to drag a stuffed teddy bear into the middle of my living room and hump it like there was no tomorrow. I'm talking, went to town. Like, porn-style. He'd look you right in the eye while he did it. And he'd only do it when I had people over...WTF! Nobody ever knows quite what to say when something like that happens...

Day late an'a dollar short...Story of my ruttin' life!

Im pretty sure thats a dominance thing, i don't know, i'm sure a cat psychologist could tell you exactly what it means, but normally when animals hump things its a dominance thing (my sisters female dog used to do it!) and when they do it so pointedly in front of you it must be a message of some sort.

I had a friend who couldn't secure her knicker draw enough to stop her westie geting in and handing her g-strings to visitors and business guests of her fathers. So dogs are just as bad.

There's a book called Only Forward ( I think thats the one) where the continents have become big mega cities divided up into zones based on like minded people - a zone where complete silence is enforced by law, a zone for colour lovers where the walls and pavements match themselves to your outfit or the zone for super efficient beurocratic types, but there is a cat zone - a zone lived in entirely by cats, and humans are allowed to enter and visit the cats but none of them live there, and the streets are spotless and the gardens well maintained.

I read that and thought - yep, entirely plausible.

I've not been without a cat for longer than a few months, one has turned up at some point. I decided that somewhere in the Cat Network the decision was made that either i deserved the constant companionship or, i needed to be watched at all times. I think its the latter.

The book is by Michael Marshall Smith but be warned, its not for the faint hearted, it gets very grim at points.

As for fairies and what not - theres a Scottish legend of house brownies - maybe thats it?

And how do we know the fairies didn't start it in the first place?
