Airwolf? Miami Vice?

No way. THIS was the best show from the Eighties, IMHO:

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Right now, I cannot honestly think of anything good from the 80s, with the exception of the tail-end of "Soap," which began in '77. I can't really judge most of it since I wasn't drawn to the shows everyone else seemed to watching, the Magnums, the MacGyvers, the A Teams, and stuff like that.

Of course, it probably had more to do with the fact that the early 80s saw the breakup of my first marriage, the beginnings of my second, along with working two jobs to put my wife through college, then starting on our family. I guess I just didn't watch a whole lot of tv that decade.

Trust me, I know what I'm doing

Television is ephemeral, so the greatest compliment any TV show can receive is to be remembered.

It's clear that a lot of people fondly remember a half hour comedy series that ran on the ABC network from 1986 to 1988 called "Sledge Hammer!"

The show chronicled the adventures of a gung ho police detective who shot first and asked questions six months later. (In fact, he forgot to yell "Freeze" before firing.)

Sledge Hammer and His GunHammer's best friend was his Magnum, and he habitually spoke to it. (Hey, people talk to their pets, right?)

Why so many people young and old remember "Sledge Hammer!" is a mystery.

Maybe it's because the show was an odd duck. Perhaps it's because current television is bland, with every situation comedy revolving around a living room and kids.

Or… it could be because a lot of people are insane.

Whatever the case, "Sledge Hammer!" is frequently referred to as a "cult" show.

For the sake of clarity, let's look up the dictionary's definition:

Cult (noun)
Usage: often attributive
1: formal religious veneration.
2: a system of religious beliefs and ritual.
3: a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious.
4: a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator.
5: great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book).

It's clear that description number three applies to the TV series "Sledge Hammer!" since many of the devotees wear flowing robes and are into human sacrifices.

The purpose of this site is to unite "Hammerheads" around the world, creating a formidable army of men, women, children and barnyard animals who'll wrest their will on society and plunder all those who don't share our same misguided beliefs.

Sorry, I've just described the Republican Party.

Lets party like its 1939

Chrisisall, you have one NBC juggernaut of the 80's, what about MIAMI VICE. Tell me you have love for the VICE.

Edit: I just read the top line of your post where you mention Vice...so whoops! Obviously your a fan.

Also,
THE FALL GUY.

ST. ELSEWHERE

HILL STREET BLUES

CHARLES IN CHARGE because of Nicole Eggert(wait was she jailbait when she made that show..?)

These are all on equal ground for me, so any one can qualify as my favorite depending on the day questioned.

Scott Biao(sp?) dated her so I have to say no. And you are right--She was (and is still) smoking. (Josie Davis, the other sister also grew up well.)

Wasn't into St. Elsewhere all that much, but liked Fall Guy and loved Blues.

I think if you were to pick a show that personified the 80's, I have to agree with Oppyh and our esteemed threadstarter and say Miami Vice.

Don't worry I'm not afraid to admit I was alive then (though I was a mere child).

For me it's a toss-up between Night Court and L.A. Law.

BTW My mom's fav was Quantum Leap (She had a thing for Scott Bakula). she would never forgive me if I didn't mention it.

Mama mia, that's a spicy meatball!

So you won't tell us your best show, just posting a red X?

I watched gobs of Tv in the early 80's. To much.
I'll go with Eischied, Stingray, Magnum PI, Fridays.
I wanted to like Fall guy, as a Lee Majors fan. But Doug Barr, or his character, just dragged. Heather Thomas was fine. Would rather watch reruns of Six Million Dollar Man, or Big Valley (which I do).

REMINGTON STEELE of course,

It wouldn't be Thursdays without MAGNUM, PI. Oh, Tom Selleck and his moustache! I also loved Higgins in all his stuffiness. And yes Higgins was Robin Masters.

And of course HILL STREET BLUES and ST. ELSEWHERE.

Speaking of St. Elsewhere, what other show would let Howie Mandel play a doctor, give Mark Harmon AIDS and end up as a fantasy of an autistic boy?

This is the show that popped into my head as soon as I saw this thread. Some of my favorite moments...

Hammer blows up an entire building in order to take down a sniper on the roof.

Hammer takes target practice inside his apartment.

Hammer tries to disarm a nuke and fails. In the aftermath we hear his captain's famous cry, "HAAAMMMMER!".

Another show I have to mention is Married with Children. Even though it went well into the nineties the early seasons were brilliant.

I'll have to retract my previous statement and select Hill Street Blues. I had been thinking that was a late 70s show, but it started in '81.

Yeah, buddy! Loved Ray's explanation of why he operates the way he does, in the pilot episode.
Quote:

"The world runs on money. Everybody walks around with this invisible number in their heads. You hit the figure close enough, the penny drops, you own the man. In Hong Kong, you can buy a murder for five bucks. In New York City, a sloppy job runs you five hundred. A neat, clean, professional hit, upwards of ten grand. On skid row, they'll kill you for your shoes. I take money out of the equation. My hands don't sweat, because I'm never at the pay window."

I couldn't find a clip of that on YouTube, but it's at 9:13 on this one...

Here's some further discussion on his barter system...

When did Quantum leap start? As I recall my sister and I were regularly glued to that one. Mostly in the 80's, being a young'un, i was watching cartoons, but i don't think thats what you're looking for.

I think I must've been around 11-12 when that was on here in the UK. I thought that show had a lot of ingenuity. Real pity it only went on for 1 season.

I hope they release it on DVD soon.
