Just venting...I have Aspergers and Tourette's... I used to just be regarded as odd/eccentric. I was fine with that but now I have labels...I've just had to re sign up for disability support at university, just so I can officially get help for my learning difficulties. I never had to do that for previous studies. It makes me feel like a freak (and not in a good way). Last year when I first encountered the process I experienced a bout of depression. I'm not ashamed or in denial about my condition, but I've never regarded myself as disabled and would rather others didn't either. I also think the labels are only relevant for medical purposes(i.e. when my treatment regime changes/ when I see the Neurologist etc.) there's nothing wrong with me I'm just another unique piece in the humanity puzzle... According to the University "inclusion" policy I had to get medical documents proving I had a known disability, before I could get learning support. Funnily enough that made me feel really excluded: all of a sudden I had to prove I wasn't a member of the accepted group, inorder to be accepted into that group???...and what happens to people who don't have a condition and need learning support..According to the answers I got to that question, they don't qualify for the same assistance...wouldn't it be nice if people just got help because they needed it, and not because they have been officially labelled as different? aaagh! I'd love to hear what people think.
