Since we're on the topic of names for children, I've been thinking about what I would name my kids if I were to have any.

Personally, I would like to have girls, but if I were to have sons, I was thinking for my firstborn, it would be Stanley Kevin Orson (last name). I always thought being named after family members was an unnecessary tradition, so I wanted to name my first son after three writer/directors I really respect. Stanley Kubrick, Kevin Smith and Orson Welles (and not after Kyle Mclachlan on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES).

But if I were to have a second son, I was thinking of naming him Flash. Because I think it would be cool to name him that, plus he's already have an awesome theme song ("Flash's Theme" by Queen) he could play to boost his spirits.

Tell me right now if naming him that will be brought up in a thread like this in the future and be mercillesly mocked.

you have every right to name your child whatever you want to name him. just expect him to have a difficult time with it. he will be picked on he will be mocked, and he will feel like a freak, but not in a good way. he may tolerate the ignorance levelled at him or he may be traumatised by it. who's to say...why subject your children to unnecessary hardships? life's gonna be tough enough without tagging a kid with an"interesting" monniker like Flash. Or maybe send him to one of those newagey schools where a lot of the kids will have "unique" names, then it won't seem so bad.. the writers names sound ok though. can't see anyone mocking those.

It's hard to name a child. No matter what, somewhere down the road some smarta kid is going to find some way to make fun of your child's name. My real name is pretty average, but it is also synonymous with a popular TV character. The real trick is teaching your child to let it roll off his/her back.

I aim to misbehave, but I usually miss!

Meh, Vladimir isn't so bad a name, I know a lot of russians cause one of the gaming alliances I am with is almost entirely russian...

But Vlad Lestat, yeah, ugh.

I know some folk with odd names, but really only two stand out, and they're just not that odd, compared to the ones posted here.

Lyford Beverage - naval officer, VERY good at his job, but that's just a freakin weird name, innit ?

And the other is the son of an old friend with the last name of Case, interesting history to the family in the first place though, you might like this.

Sam and his wife consumated their love and concieved in the back of Sam's first car, and their marriage and life has stood the test of time, and so Sam did a full factory-pristine restore of that car, and on the night of the senior prom, gave the car, title and all, to his son, Justin and soon thereafter became a granddad... you couldn't pry that car away from Justin for all the money in the world, cause HIS son is now approaching that age... and Justin grins like a madman when he washes and waxes that old beast.

But what in the hell possessed him to name the kid Justin Case ?

S'funny tho, the kid didn't have an issue with it (dear heavens imma geezer, still callin him kid when his own son is 15..) but always used to tell me he wanted to do condom commercials when he grew up.

Came you imagine.. "HI, i'm Justin Case, and let's talk about protection..."

Meh heh heh.

Well if your last name is Hogg, you don’t want to name your daughter Ima. A simple google search of “Ima Hogg” reveals that the Hogg family got a lot of laughs at the expense of the daughters.

ideally, of course you would teach your kid to let it roll right off them (ignore the bully, deal with the bully in a humorous way, don't let the bully know it's getting to you etc etc)...but whether or not that would have an effect is another story. the kid might get picked on everywhere he/she goes, or might be predisposed to sensitivity. think hard before you give them a name you know is stupid!( I never said there was anything wrong with all original names) think hard about what is motivating you to give them that name. they have it for life.

I suspect it would come up, yes. And I suspect that "it being cool" was the reason for most of the parents who named their kids in the ways that have been mentioned here.

How about giving the kid a cool nickname instead, and still give him the chance to become president one day? *G* The whole "envision their name behind a fancy title" method seems very reasonable to me!

Comedian Lewis Black did a bit on this a few years ago, there are actually children with these frikkin names

1)Asshole (a-SHOLE-a)
2)Shithead (sh-they-ed)
3)ABCDE (ab-ce-day)
I swear there were more, but they slip my mind at the moment.

Then there's actor Jason Lee(any Kevin Smith movie, my name is Earl,Etc.)
named his firstborn son: Pilot Inspektor

used to know a guy that at one time wanted to name his firstborn "Dime Bag" after "Dime Bag Darryl" of Pantera fame...
luckily for his daughter, they went with Madison...

OK if you are , for some reason, compelled to give your child a creative name..give it as the middle name so they can choose whether they think it's cool or just conceal it if, by the time they are a teenager, it's now irrelevant and stupid.

I mean come on... you really actually hamper a kid if they plan to do anything in business, banking, or law/politics. Do you really want to have to walk into a boardroom and say " Hi I'm Rocket Rodriguez"
(Robert Rodriguez the film maker's kids are named Rocket, Rebel, and Racer)No one would ever take you seriously and you'd have to work twice as hard just to get a chance.

I think a lot of strange names that people come up with were "it seemed like a good idea at the time" mistakes. Dweezil, Moon Unit, Ahmet, and Diva, are a few (Frank Zappa's kids) though Ahmet isn't AS bad.

My bf doesn't like the name Hayden Andrew (even though its tradition in his family for the dad's first name to be the first born boy's middle name). My mother and I personally don't see the problem with it. :-P

point of interest: you should never name your child after a fruit. ever.

Can you imagine one kid using the power of the force while the other uses the power of her elfish kind. What a family. they'd kick butt.

Anyway i heard on the radio it is illegal in germany to give children stupid names after a kid ended up with ten middle names after his mother went over board.

you know what really annoys me though, is these young mothers here in NZ that uses their babies photos as their own id photos on bebo.
I can't help thinking how dangerous that is for the protection and privacy of the kid. Anyone can get hold of them.

My family tree has names like Albert Percy (that was just one guy) but also roberta, and gertrude I'm thankful for the name Joanna

Bebo is this communication network where everyone gets their own page where they can leave photos, pictures, and poems and stuff for their friends to come see and leave them messages etc. It is really cool if it is done properly. You can report abuse and you can allow entry to only friends if you want to, but i know people to go to the extreme with leaving their phone numbers and freaky gay naked photos of themselves and they turn it into something nasty. but if you stick to who you know it's a cool way to communicate.
My page has my id photo of Serenity ship and i have a message to recommend people watch firefly to try and gain more fans and i have photos of the movie up for people to see.

It's my little contribution and so far i got my brother to watch it and he said "shit that girl's got some moves" refering to River.

On a somewhat similar note, I have a friend whose full name is Beatrix. She prefers to be called Trixi. But I always thought that if you were to shorted that name, it should be just B. Because "Hey B" I think rolls off the tongue more naturally than "Hey Trixi". Also, B I think is short, hip and enigmatic. When I hear Trixi, I think 3 things.

1. Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids.
2. Miss Trixi, the senile old lady that "worked" at Levi Pants in A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES
3. Either a stripper or a call girl or just anyone in the sex trade.

And speaking of DUNCES, I think anyone who names their kid Ignatius is setting their kid up for an ass kicking.

THESOMNAMBULIST

When my dad worked overseas he used to come across some very strange names.

In Brasil he worked with a guy called 'Eddiemurphy'. All his first name. His parents heard the name and didn't quite understand the concept of forenames and surnames and just liked the sound of it and named him so. I don't recall what his actualy last name was... But apparently it created a trend and often film stars complete names would be used for kids' first names.

In Ghana, he worked with a guy who was head of the department called (and I kid you not) 'OfficeBoy'. But apparently it was pronounced very quickly so you didn't quite hear it as such.

It's hard with names though, people have such odd criteria these days. Objecting to naming their child after a name they've heard. So all these unusual derivatives occur. Or deciding to hand their own name back down to the child, so no originality takes place. Some object to naming them after a monarchy, so names like Charles or Victoria are considered unfashionable. Country names seem popular these days as do names of states or months or days. I knew a guy at college who went out with a girl called Tuesday... It seems unusual at first but once you become familiar with it it was kind of pleasant, and seemed to suit her.

Over the years I've mulled long and hard about names for my kids, should I ever have any and I think I'd stay safe on familiar ground. Being unique doesn't have quite the same draw it did when I was younger.

I just know if I have a boy and a girl I MUST keep away from the names Ella and Sam. Which is a pity because I love those names.

In my mind, these are two of the worst name-blunders of all time.

1. Same first name as last name... (I work with a George St. George)

2. Naming your child after an STD!!!! (My wife, a nurse, once worked on a child named Clamidia. The mom just thought it was a pretty name.

I think hardcore music fans would be the worst at choosing names for kids. Because if they like a band or song in particular, then they would name their kid after that song so that they could reference the song, which after a while would lose it's meaning and just become annoying. Like if a couple were huge Beatles fans, they'd name a girl Prudence, so that when she's a kid and in the house, they'd have an excuse to say "Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play." And then when other people know her and hear that song, they'll keep saying lyrics to her, which would drive her nuts.

Or if they're Simon and Garfunkel lovers, they'd name their son Richard Corry, and then everyone will expect him to be some rich bastard who'd blow his brains out.

I think that should be a rule for first time parents when it comes to naming their kids. If you're naming them after a song, they for it to be a generic name that doesn't conjur up a specific song with specific lyrics that any idiot can recall at any time. I pity girls named Roxanne, because I imagine they get tons of red light jokes.

STRANGEBIRD

I grew up in South Carolina and I remember hearing all sorts of odd names. The strangest I'd say was Orangello, though you'd be surprised it actually gets a number of hits on google and other search engines. Even weirder still I seem to remember there being a Yelongello in the same class as well. Pretty sure they weren't related. Not certain on the spelling, their parents may have atleast been creative there. Anyway food is another no no for naming I'd say.

Now me I go by Max, which is my middle name and I always get people asking me "What's it short for? Maxamillion, Maxwell?" I always reply that "It's not short for anything, I was named after my Grandpa". I always seem to have people mispelling it too, usualy Maxx but once actually Macks. Anyway even though I go by my middle name I still gotta love my first name, Douglas. I mean who can't love a name which in Scots Gaelic(Dubhghlas) translates to Blood River.

I heard a parent calling out to her child the other day. the child's name was Spirulina. Why not just call her Kelp or Seaweed, or Parsely. eek!

I've always been rather amused by the name Arsenio Hall. Is he ever called "Arse Hall" for short?

I hate it when people name their kids after somebody in particular. A kid's name should be their own name, and not a leftover from someone else. Just imagine, a parent always saying "Now, you share the same name as so-and-so, and it's a hard name to live up to, so you need to blah blah blah."

I also hate people who name their kids __Jr. Hello, the kid is not an exact copy of it's dad or mom, and shouldn't be named as such.

Also, kids shouldn't be named stuff like Rose Thorn, or Brandy Wine.

I say try to avoid common names. In high school, there were four people in my grade that were named Ashley. Same spelling and everything. Also we had three Jessica's and two Rebbeca's.

And can you imagine naming a poor defenceless babe "Archibald"?

Naming kids (daughters) after flowers isn't too bad, I don't think.

It looks like I'm just picky about names, doesn't it? If I ever have a daughter, I'd name her Alexandria, after the library in Egypt, but I'd give her a nickname like Alexa or something so she has a name that's her own (and easier to say).

Not sure if this counts all that much, but in Orcherstra, I play next to a Bangladeshi kid, named Dickens. Strikes me as downright strange. Me and everyone else in the room, in fact. Even him.

STRANGEBIRD

Names like Robert and Jonathan for a boy aren't bad. Very common but with many variations and possible nicknames... Rob, Bob, Bobby, Robby, Bert.... John, Johnny, Jack..... Still there are enough of them so please stop. I led a hike with a dozen kids once and we had four Jonathans and three Williams, a Jacob, two Bobbies and a Daemon. That was just in one group of twelve eleven year old boys.

When naming anything, be it a child, pet, horse, car, etc... take time and consider various possibilities for nicknames. A name isn't just a name, look at most and the roots actually mean something. It's a serious deal and most people just don't give a flip or are just too screwed up to understand that naming a child after a body part or cheap food is not just dumb it's tasteless and demeaning.

That being said be creative. Most of the people who are going to taunt your child are going to find a way even if their name is "normal". The real thing you need to do as a parent is teach your child from a very early age that those people are the ones with the problem. As for family, if they say it's stupid they probably have a normal dull as a gray rock name and shouldn't be given the time of day when it comes to originality.

Ok that's all for my 20 something Bachelors Guide to naming your child. I was originally just going to mention the names I could remember of the kids on that hike but somehow it became this... go figure.

Like the other teachers on here, I've heard more than a few unusual names but there aren't any that I would say you should never give to your kids. there are a few that I would suggerst you shouldn't give your kids lightly.

Probably the most unusual name I encounter commonly is ANZAC. In my 17 years teaching I don't remember there never being at least one person at my school called Anzac. What makes this name unusual is that it's an acronym for Australia/New Zealand Army Corps. Both New Zealand and our convict cousins have National holidays on 25 April to commemorate the landing of our troops in Turkey in 1915.

Translations are also a source of mirth with names. I taught a boy this year whose name was Ahi Kaa. This translates as "Home Fires." He must've liked the home fires a little too much as he was often truant.

He wasn't as often truant as Judas, I should note. That's right - I taught Judas.

I also taught a boy named River. River is not a girl's name - in fact it is not a person's name. It's the name of a flowing body of water. (He did really enjoy the Firefly unit I teach....)

Last year, I had not one but two boys named Cruz/Cruze. No-one in New Zealand speaks Spanish - they were named for what you do on a Saturday night downtown in your car.

However, easily the most improbable name I encountered was Riot. I kid you not - his parents named him Riot. And in case you think that's a fluke, his younger brother was called Chaos. As you might expect, Riot didn't last long at school so Chaos decided to enroll elsewhere when his turn came.

I live in Australia where there seems to be a national tendency to mispronounce foreign names, simply because they are foreign, even if they involve the use of phonemes familiar to Australian English. My first name is Rosaria...that's rose + aria...how hard is that? apparently extremely hard, as my whole life people have gotten it wrong. I've had: Rosina,Rosetta,Rosanna,Azaria (that's a whole other story!) Rezairia, Rosemary etc. So I get people to call me Rose, there's not much you can do to bugger that up. except label me with the dreaded "Rosa" which I refuse to respond to.
