Hey All

I'm surprised again that no one has started a thread about this, so thought I'd get it started.

Yesterday afternoon, I saw THE SIMPSONS MOVIE. Going into it, I didn't really have any expectations about it. Like millions of others, I grew up with THE SIMPSONS when I was a kid. But around 2000 or so, after the "Bart gets a punk racehorse/Homer goes to Jockeyland" episode, I stopped watching altogether. And aside from the Ricky Gervais penned episode and the one where they went to Canada, I just stopped watching because THE SIMPSONS were no longer funny. They had become a parody of itself and just seeing it's slow decline in quality was painful. So when I had heard that they were FINALLY going to make the movie, I didn't care too much.

But all that changed yesterday afternoon. Oh My God, that was truly amazing. THIS is the Simpsons of my childhood. This is the Simpsons that I remember from growing up. The Simpsons that was insanely funny with a gag every minute, that tapped into the zeitgeist, that had a true emotional core and was the reflection of our society that it once was.

What were my favorite gags? It's like choosing your favorite star. There's so many and it's hard to pick which one in particular was so good. But my personal favorites were Green Day pulling out violins and playing as their barge sank into Springfield Lake, Colin saying to Lisa "My Dad's not Bono." twice, the whole AN IRRITATING TRUTH bit, the writing on the side of the pig silo "(no reward)", "Oh my God, it's THEM!!" and the clerk is pointing at the family that mathces the squiggled version Bart creates, in the NSA when one of the phone calls was "You hang up.";"No, YOU hang up.";"OK.*click*";"Hey, She hung up on me!!" and the one excited guy screaming "THE GOVERNMENT ACTUALLY FOUND SOMEONE!!!" and Martin beating the crap out of the Jimbo, Kearny and Nelson. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. The whole thing was just awesome and amazing. It's tied with RATATOUILLE as the best animated movie of the year so far.

So who else thinks THE SIMPSONS MOVIE re-established their faith in THE SIMPSONS.

I haven't seen the movie yet (I wanted to last night but got outvoted, grrr). But you should really give the Simpsons TV show another try. And if you don't like an episode, watch it again. I know that sounds like reverse logic, but the more you watch, the more you pick up little hilarious moments that pass you by the first time.

You say you watched it growing up. Maybe you are still watching it as a "children's show". I'm not trying insult you, I'm just saying... when I was a kid, I watched the old "Batman" and LOVED it because I thought it was cool and I had a crush on Robin. As an adult, I will watch it for totally different reasons.

Thanks for the great review, I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing it now!

All I can say is this: when I left the theater, I actually had a headache from laughing. I can't think of a better endorsement than that.

I can. Two months ago, I went to see KNOCKED UP with my friend. She told me after the movie that she laughed so hard that she couldn't breathe.

And no, I don't watch it the way that I watched it when I was a kid. I do watch newer episodes looking for the same biting social satire, true emotion and gut busting laughter that I recognized from the earlier episodes. But it just seems missing and really random. Like they'd do one plotline for ten minutes or so, and then change the plotline completely. At least with the earlier episodes, there was something to tie into the beginning. There was cause and effect. Now it just a sharp turn to the left after going straight.

But I don't want to turn this into a "does THE SIMPSONS suck now" debate. I want to focus on the awesomeness of the movie.

What was your favorite gag?

Kids went to see it on the weekend and keep singing "Spiderpig." I'll rent the dvd maybe. Why go watch The Simpsons when you can see it for free on TV?
