Sadly, our beloved Mr. Wizard has passed away. Don Herbert, 89, died from bone cancer. He will be missed by several generations of kids.

I loved watching his shows. LOVED! I remember the time he taught us how to slice a banana without cutting or peeling it. And of course, getting sick on the merry-go-round trying to prove which way the water drained, heh.

What do you remember?

Laying comatose on the couch at 6AM, dreading that I had to be at school in an hour and sort of resenting that the whole "learning thing" was being pushed into my TV time by Nickelodeon.

Ride down from Asgard to the battlefield,
Bringer of the valiant dead who died but never yielded,
Carry we who die in battle over land and sea,
Across the rainbow bridge to Valhalla,
Odin's waiting for me.

Important people don't do field work.

I remember plenty that I won't go into here, but I dearly loved that show.

Especially when they would show Rodin's The Thinker in the opening sequence and the brain would come out!

GAH!

Tarnish removal, heat radiation, film projectors, water displacement...He had something to teach us all, and it was all done in an entertaining and pleasant manner.

To Don Herbert, Mr. Wizard...the teacher I always wanted and never got.

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

What happened? He see your face?

Very Sad. Loved the show back in the day. Prolly saw every one.

I remember the little "Ah Ha" in the theme song. (and the brain thing 'pez)

As far as experiments, I guess the metal container contracting as a result of pressure/temp change was cool.

I liked it becuase it was something on my level that I could watch with my dad...that wasn't Nova, heh. We wanted to shatter an apple, just like Mr. Wizard. Darnit, we never did.

Oh! The flash paper!

STOWEAWAY

I loved watching Mr. Wizard!
And he even saved my ass one time in elementary school.
One evening I realized that the science fair was the next morning and I hadn't even started on a project. So I pooled all my Mr. Wizard knowledge and whipped something up realy quick.
Of course, the teachers were onto my plan. I did't get a very good grade on it. But I didn't fail either.
It may show my age, but all my old TV heroes are heading out of this world -- Mr. Wizard, Captain Kangaroo. Sigh
