Okay, somebody help me out here. I went back to watch Bladerunner on DVD for the first time since forever. Am I crazy or did one Nexus 6 replicant come up missing after all was said and done?

In the beginning, Bryant says they need to track down five "skin jobs." One thing leads to another; we see Deckard "retire" one replicant. The next thing we hear is Bryant talking about still needing to kill four replicants, because another replicant has just escaped from Tyrell Corps. Wouldn't that bring the tally back up to five?

Am I missing something? Was Rachel the fifth replicant to begin with?

If nobody gives a squat then that's okay too. It was one of my favorite movies in college. I had that and "Apocalypse Now" pretty much on repeat on my DVD player back in the day.

"Fiery the angels fell, burning with the fires of Orc."

Howdy.
Not an expert on this movie, but I am pretty sure Rachel was the one they were talking about. She was a Replicant. Hope that helps.

There's also the ever-raging "Is Deckard a Replicant" debate.

Can't wait till we finally get to see the real Director's Cut next year.

StoryMark, I almost brought that up, too! Not sure where I read it, but the director was asked if Deckard was a Replicant, and he said yes....when Harrison Ford was told this in another interview, he said "It would have helped if they told me that fact!"...or something along those lines.

Next year, eh? We have to wait that long?

The number was always a little loopy. Six escaped in the shuttle that landed on Earth. One supposedly got 'fried' in an electronic fence or something prior to the beginning of the movie, which makes five, Zorah gets it, that leaves four and then Rachael jumped ship from Tyrell. With Rachael, that should make five. There always seemed to be one unaccounted for (Or maybe it's been too long and I'm not remembering it right, I've been holding out for the longest time for the release due out this year).

Originally, there was another replicant who was written/cut out of all subsequent action. However that one quote got through and is generally regarded now as a continuity error.

Thanks for all your help browncoats. For some reason, the way this movie was lit might have seduced me more than I'd care to admit. That, and of course the flying cars, coupled with Vangelis' soundtrack. What's a sci-freak to do?

How about that unicorn!?

The 6th replicant's name was Mary. She was to be played by actress Stacey Nelkin, but her part got cut for budget reasons.

I'm pretty sure the conversation is along the lines of:
Police commissioner type guy: "Just Five more to go"
Deckard: "There's Four, four more!"
PCTG: "Wrong, that skin job you VK'd at tyrell has just turned up missing."

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/trivia has this to say:
The dialogue in all releases of the movie alludes to another replicant who dies before Deckard's final battles with Pris and Batty. The conflicting dialogue occurs in the first conversation between Deckard and Bryant. Bryant initially tells Deckard there are four "skin jobs" on the loose, but minutes later says six escaped, and one was killed by the "electronic gate", which should leave five. The explanation is that the script originally contained an additional replicant named "Mary", but time and budgetary constraints resulted in her being written out. M. Emmet Walsh who plays Bryant, reports that new dialogue was recorded to change the number of replicants in this scene, but Scott inexplicably only used half of the new dialogue, resulting in the inconsistency.
There's also a discussion further down (under the heading "spoilers") of the scripts and how many replicants are in each draft.

If you want the scripts themselves, go to:

I have to say it, some of the lip sync is utter crap. When deckard is interrogating that snake guy, you can hear Deckard talking but the Snake guy's lips are moving and he's gesticulating wildly. Its a scene that has always bothered me, makes the film feel, less finsihed.

...which is ironic, given how obnoxiously perfectionist Ridley Scott is always said to be (especially as regards to this movie.)

I always thought Rachel was the last, Pris, Zhora, 2 men and Rachel. That would be 5. Over the years Decker was suppose to be one even though Harrison Ford disagrees with it. Great movie. The detective that shadowed Decker was suppose to wax Decker. But that'a all in the wash.

This is the part where I hijack this thread to say that when the new 'Ultimate Cut' comes out this year, I will, of course be drooling over Ridley's final version, but it's the old 'narrated' version that will get the most play with me (crap lip-synching and visible lines on the spinners included) ; it's the version I went to the theatres 20 or more times to see, and the version that gives it that 40's detective-retro feel. The fact that Harrison read the lines so flat so as to discourage their use only makes the reading all the more realistic to me, given Deckard's world-weary 'tude.

I agree with you, chrisisall. While I am looking forward to the ultimate cut, I was raised on the version you speak of. Seeing the first Director's cut through me off...where was the voice-over?!?
Still. I will give the new one a chance, and when it is over, I will throw the time-worn Beta copy into the machine and watch it for old-time's sake.

Why Beta? The narrated version is supposed to be included in the 'Ultimate Cut' (the Final Cut will be just the newest version).

Chrisisall, the Beta tape was the first copy of it that I owned outright. So, it's more nostalgia than anything else. I am happy to hear that version will be on the Ultimate Cut...thank you for that!

Just a note......

I was searching around filmsite.org. They actually report the same dialogue inconsistency regarding the number of escaped replicants.

At least I'm not nuts.

Just watching the movie through again, at the beginning of the film he's sent to kill four replicants. After he shoots one he's told "just four more", which is when he finds out about the disapearance of rachael.

Well I remember the count was six who escaped and one got fried. This is before Rachael ran away. She was still under the illusion she was human when Ford was called to the police station. Then when they showed him the profiles, of the Nexus 6 that escaped, there are only four. So someone missed that line in the editing department.
