Hey All

I was just looking at a release schedule for movies coming out in October, and I saw that the week before Halloween, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS is being re-released in IMAX 3D. Now, I'm not sure if re-releasing this movie in that format will either help or hurt the film, but of all the various IMAX 3D movies coming out, this is one I wouldn't mind driving all the way to Calgary or Winnipeg to see, even though I have it in my DVD collection.

Like the original WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, it always galls me to see this movie regarded as a "cult classic", when in fact it's just a classic period. I was 9 when I first saw it on video as an Xmas gift (never got to see it on the big screen, so maybe that's why I'm willing to drive 8 plus hours there and back to see an 80 minute movie), and I've loved it ever since. And it's had such an impact on my generation. I see college students wearing NIGHTMARE t-shirts and all this NIGHTMARE paraphinalia in the comic stores I frequent. I don't see it a lot on tv, but I imagine sooner than later, it'll be part of the holiday block of Xmas specials and movies that's always on tv, alongside IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS and NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CHRISTMAS VACATION.

More than just the jaw droppingly amazing animation, the catchy songs and score and the bizzare, yet endearing characters, it just has this great spirit to it. A really pure spirit that takes you back to your childhood. It's dark without being malicious, it's sentimental without a hint of cynicism, and no matter how many times you see it, it never get's old.

I think the only movie I've seen that could become the next generations NIGHTMARE is MONSTER HOUSE, which I think is basically a CG update of THE GOONIES. I can see MONSTER HOUSE in about ten years being a perrenial kids classic.

So who here is also under the spell of this great movie/

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I never got it, sorry. It was one of the many movies all my friends were obsessed with, and I was sitting there scratching my head. No one could tell me what made it so great; it mostly annoyed me. You obviously really like it and I'm not saying you're wrong, I just never got it.

Come on, is there a better sight gag around than the parents eagerly asking their son what he got for Christmas and he bewilderingly shows them a severed head?

The severed head is just soooo funny!!

Gotta agree it's a top film but I don't know whether I'd drive 8 hours for it.

Like Firefly for TV/SciFi conversations it's one that I mention to others when the subject of animation or dark films comes up.

One of the guys I work with recently told me that his 5 year old son loves Corpse Bride but had never seen Nightmare. I leant him the DVD and I am now his hero.

I kinda like the term 'cult classic' although it is vastly misused, just like the term 'classic'. Too many blockbusters get called 'classics' just because they make money and a lot of people like them at the time.
To the same degree a smaller movie that gets attention can be labelled a 'cult classic' even if it is pretty crap.
What exactly defines the characteristics needed to fit these terms is many fold and subject to personal opinion like everything else. But that is off topic and a subject for another discussion.

I enjoyed this film. I think the use of old style stopmotion animation at the time was so refreshing to see. I'm a big fan of all the old Ray Harryhausen films, such as Jason and the Argonauts and 7th Voyage of Sinbad. I think it was quite brave of Tim Burton to try and re-introduce the medium. Funnily enough although I'm a huge Danny Elfman fan I found the songs a little strident by the end but it's a great piece of work and clearly will stand the test of time.

I'd pick a cult classic over a classic any day. Cult classics are fantastic ground braking intelligent cinema that most people don't get because it's to intelligent for them ("hey ma, why didn't they have them thar exploshons?").

Classics are what the majority of people think are good. That should tell you something right there.
