"Ahh, my wife's nephew. At dinner tonight I'm getting earful. But there is no way out of that."

For some reason, this is one of my favorite lines, partly because it says that a terrible, sadistic man like Niska could actually have a wife, and that it made me think of what kind of person Mrs. Niska would be. I decided to put down this thread so people might explore the notion of 'Mrs. Niska.' What's she like? What does she like? Is she Dutch-Russian?

I need answers! I was going to write a fanfic about that conversation about Niska's wifes nephew, but don't really have her character defined.

I think a little chaos is in order.

I see him with some bimbo trophy wife, getting on in years. She stays t'home while he runs his evil empire... Think Laura Bush, but with bigger breasts.

I see her as a sturdy Eastern European woman who doesn't take crap from anyone not even Niska. She is probably the only person who can tell him to do something. Additionally, she is fully aware of what he does and her only complaint is that when he gets himself killed she will have to clean up the mess.

I'm putting my money on Helga or Natasha or Yolanda maybe Bridgette, or how about Saffron? It is his turn!

PHAEDRA

I've always regretted that the show ended before we got to meet Niska's better half. As part of a series of filks I did celebrating/damning Valetines Day, I wrote a piece for the Niskas which you may enjoy.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=3108

It needs to be sung to various tunes from Fiddler on the Roof, preferably in a thick Russian accent.

Phaedra (a bad luck name)

I always imagined her as a very bossy women with a love for yelling at interplanetery crimebosses. Also Ive always imagined her as somewhat of a trophywife once but now more of a sweet but disturbed lady.

My new revised opinion is that Niska is a teddy bear compared to her, and that she actually runs everything. For some reason, I couldn't imagine Niska being one for the trophy wives, although he is rather Bond-villainish.

I think a little chaos is in order.

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

If she can give Niska an earful, she must be one intimidating lady. I can't imagine a "trophy wife" being able to give her gangster/mobster/insane husband an earful, since I always get the impression trophy wives are very dispensible. She's doubtless attractive, but I bet she's large and pushy, with one of those voices you just can't shut out.

SCORPIONREGENT

She would have to be tough, but I'm not sure she would be able to tell Niska what to do out right. If that were so then he wouldn't have dared kill her kin. I see her as a counter-balance niether too strong or to weak, but with different strengths and weaknesses. A real looker, but with a enormous amount of passion within. After all she gives the guy an earful, that's shows moxy. Schemeing and manipulative, but not like YoSaffBrig who only played people. Mrs Niska would be a bit more hands on. She would have her own personal servants to do dirty work of her own, not depending on her hubby to lend her Crow or one of his other minions when she wanted something done. She would be younger than Niska, but not so young as to be considered a igenue, perhaps thirtyish. Niska would have a even younger woman as his misstress. I imagine that their marriage was aranged or at the very least political. Would there be love between them? Now that's the question.

PURPLEBELLY

In my imagination, Mrs Niska isn't afraid of Adelai because to her he isn't a mobster - he's the insecure village boy she fell in love with all those decades ago. The Niska's tragedy is the childless state of their union - this is what fuels Mrs Niska's generosity to their worthless relatives and Mr Niska's dislocation from humanity. I think of Adelai as Victor Meldrew with power

SCHOONER

I'd imagine someone closer to the image of old-style Russian aristocracy: older, cultured, arrogant, intelligent. Probably as cold, in some ways colder, than her husband (torture a member of his wife's family to death and all he expects in as earful? She can't be too attached to that family). I would even go so far as to venture she is the long-range planner of the pair. She is the one diversifying the empire while Niska indulges his more gruesome hobbies. Maybe it started out as a political marriage with a lot of scheming to get rid of each other early on. By now, they are settled into a routine, with extremely creepy dinner conversations.
