You know...I wasn't really into hairy men before I saw Jayne. But...he brought me around on a lot of things.

Well first of all I like tall. I think his height more than anything else gets my engine revved. He is a big bear of a man and could probably pick me up, thats worthy of more engine revving. And Jaynes personality is good too. He may be a bit dim, but he has a soft side, that goes along well with is animalistic side.

Everyone on the ship, with the exception of Simon (for me at least), has qualities. I'd have to say the only character I'd put above Jayne in sexiness is Wash.

He'd be good for a nice tumble, but nothing more profound. I don't see him as squishy and cuddly inside.

Caring, in a way that would benefit him, sure. And I do like his blunt honesty instead of tiptoing around his feelings.

Him and Kaylee? Eh. No.

Sorry, Jaylee squicks me to death because Kaylee’s way to soft for the merc. He needs someone with a little more edge. If Wash wasn’t married, I could see Kaylee with him, if not Simon.

I’m a Rayne shipper all the way. The two have murderous chemistry.

Yea i like Rayne even more even more then Jaylee.

Woman, you are completely off your nut.

Well, not much to really say on the matter other than the man is just... *sigh* Ok, let's see if I can explain my love of the man: He's just beautiful for one thing. The picture of a manly man, tall, scruffy, strong. Has simply gorgeous blue eyes! And his smile and laugh, my, my! But also he just seems like when the chips are down he'd be there. Yes, his life of crime has made him a greedy man, but I think when it comes right down to it the man has a big heart. Also I think he'd be a hell of a cuddler, dunno why.

Oh and 'Jaylee'... no, sorry. I love Simon and Kaylee together too much for that. I'm more a 'Rayne' kinda girl.

Glad someone revived this..as we were just discussing Jayne gently patting Saffron consolingly in Our Mrs. Reynolds in another thread...
So what's not to like? Big macho stud, sense of humor, kind to his mom, very gentle and kind toward women...I mean come on

I didn't notice this was an old thread at first and when I got to the fight about whether his eyes are blue or not I thought, oh no, are we arguing about THIS again?? LOL!

I think AB is a very fine looking man in a very approachable way. He looks like somebody one might actually meet some day. Plus he is almost exactly my age (with a few days) and looks like some of the guys I actually know around here in the Midwest (only he takes better care of himself than most of them). He looks like he would be NICE as well as good looking and funny.

I suppose I like him on some deep, biological level, the level that says, "Nice man, would make good husband and father of children." Kind of irritates me that I would think that way, but I think it's the truth.

Jayne, though? Not so much. I love the character to death, but have to recognize that it's really Adam Baldwin who is flipping my switches, not the character he plays.

Not going to bash Jayne because a) I like the character b) this is a Jayne lovin'' thread, not a Jayne hatin' thread and c) Hippies are all about spreading the love - just wanted to give a shout out to all the ladies who don't find Jayne attractive. Got nothing against Adam, but Jayne is not my type!

That's it. Just mentioning that there are some weirdos like me out there. Please continue the Jayne lovefest. I'll be taking care of Mal and Simon, since they're looking a little lonely...

LOL DTH

See for me it's Jayne not Adam. Adam is a serious family man with a wife and kids. Very straight arrow and all...Jayne on the other hand is trouble with a capital T and he is ( in the immortal words of Lord Byron) mad, bad, and dangerous to know. Which flips all my switches with enough juice to light up Chicago

HIGGINS

Although I think that Adam Baldwin himself is very funny and affable, it's the character of Jayne that I enjoy in large part because both he and Wash remind me of guys I grew up with. Yeah, being a TV/film actor is about being easy on the eyes, but for my money Jayne could be played by Jabba the Hut and he would still be my fave character on the show.
I suspicion that the reason fans took Jayne to their hearts is because, deep down, he's the character that's the most like us. We would like to be as clever as River or as heroic as Mal or as tough as Zoe, but really, we're a heck of a lot more like Jayne than we'd like to admit--not that bright, not that heroic, and not (all) that tough. Think about some of the funny Jayne moments in the show: Jayne ripping off his body hair in the opening of "Jaynestown", Jayne wearing the goofy hat in "The Message", etc. These moments are funny because we've all made fools out of ourselves in similar ways--we recognize ourselves in Jayne.
Of course, part of Jayne's appeal is his blunt-spokenness. From a writer's point of view, it's necessary to have a character who is going to ask the obvious questions that are on the mind of the audience e.g. why not simply dump the Alliance's two most wanted fugitives off at the nearest port? And because Jayne is a bit of a thickie--as most guys are whether they think so or not--it's easy for the writers to give him the funny clueless lines.
Yet for all the times that Jayne is as dumb as a box of rocks, notice how many times that he is right and the smarter people on the ship are wrong. To name a couple: In "Bushwhacked", if Book had simply "said a few words as they slid on by", Serenity wouldn't have been caught by a Reaver booby-trap, menaced by a proto-Reaver, and arrested by the Alliance. In the beginning of the Serenity movie, Jayne correctly points out that most of Mal's plans tend to go south and, sure enough, the crew winds up fighting for their lives with the extra armaments that Jayne was mocked for bringing along.
Re: Jayne and Kaylee, although they seem like an obvious pairing--both working class, both with natural talent in their field, both without a lot of formal schooling--I can't see them getting together. Kaylee is young and a major romantic and Jayne is simply not as much of a white knight in her eyes as Simon is. Simon is the noble young doctor who risks all to save his teenage sister from the evil government. He's a Sir Lancelot or a Galahad, fighting impossible odds to do the right thing. Jayne ain't. If Kaylee were older and had knocked around a bit more, Jayne might be more appealing to her, but that's not the way she is.
She's comfortable with Jayne, but I suspect that she views him more as a brother or a cousin than a potential lover.
For his part, I daresay that Jayne does have a crush on Kaylee and not in a brotherly way. Who can blame him? Kaylee is THE most loveable character on the ship--the one person the whole crew is fond of and the one person (apart from Mal) the crew would kill for. Jayne doesn't approve of Simon because Simon's not the kind of man he can respect (and vice-versa). Being book smart, emotionally controlled, and sophisticated doesn't get you anywhere in Jayne's world just as being a professional mercenary gets you no respect in Simon's world. Notice that Simon gets a grudging sort of respect from Jayne only when he does something Jayne can understand--threatens to kill him in retaliation for Jayne betraying them in "Ariel".
Well, I have gone on a bit, haven't I? Best post this and let the keyboard have a rest ....

Thank you for saying that. I had wanted to when I saw this, but then I realized... I couldn't say it nicely enough. Nothing wrong with Jayne: I would just want something a little more permanent. I'll take tortured soul over double-crosser any day.

You can have Simon, though - there's just something about him. I'm not really into horribly awkward people, either. I would ask why people love Simon, but I don't want to hijack the thread.

It all seems to be a matter of preference - like Jaylee and Rayne and Miver (or whatever we're calling Mal/River), none of which I ever want to see [because it ruins the good family dynamic I love (everyone is doing romance, and the platonic love on Firefly is what makes it special)], it's about perspective. What each person chooses to emphasize and deemphasize plays a role in their 'vision' of the character, and thus affects (effects?) the likeability factor. And, as much as I love some well-written fanfiction, Jaylee, Rayne, and Miver (along with slash; nothing wrong with homosexuality, but - again - it sullies the family of it all) are out.

I'm addicted to parentheses. Sorry about that.

Oiy vey this thread took a turn..now i gotto type

One thing i wanan get sorted-Adam Baldwin is NOT Jayne- He just played him.

Higgens I agree with your post about the character of Jayne-i also agree (much to my chagrin) your logic when it comes to Jaylee. But Kaylee isn't the saint she seems to be. Non of the Characters are so one dimentional (ok cept Simon) too bad thier stories are never going to be told. But i would like to point out Remember how she met Mal(see "Out of Gas")? Other than that i think Simon is a huge Boob-but he is her boob :)

Ying- I like that Jayne pic- His hair is very Romanesque. I don't know why people like Simon either? He is rather a coward and a boob. But for every argument on why he is a coward a pris and a boob- they always come back to how he saved River. Freud would have had a field day with that.
Family values: Now what would a show with blatent sexual overtones and themes (like Companions, sex with hookers, naked guys sitting on rocks, sex between married people, homosexuality, sex in the engine room, YoSafBridge) have to do with Family values. I don't think any of Joss' shows have "Family values"

I didn't say family values; I said family. Joss has a habit of creating extended families (Buffy, Angel, and Firefly all have them), and for me, Jayne and Kaylee have more of a good sibling relationship than any sort of romantic/sex one. River is like the crazy cousin to the two of them, so Rayne doesn't work; Mal's the father-figure, so anything with him and River turns me off, too.

It's not that the relationships aren't perfectly plausible, or that they haven't been well-written; but, at the end of the day, the only crew-to-crew romances are Simon/Kaylee, Mal/Inara (eventually), and Wash/Zoe.

And, again, these are my opinions. I probably don't express them as well as I could, and they might seem closed-minded, but there they are.

Tina- oh yeah:) Grin I know Adam isn't Jayne 'cause I'd not be attracted to Adam. He's just not my kind of guy. Jayne is. I love that there is no pretense to Jayne. He is who he is and he never expects anyone to like or accept that. I think he just doesn't understand Simon. He gets Simon saving River, but he doesn't get Simon's unspoken expectation that others will or should be protective or River because she's helpless. I get the sense that Jayne and his family were left on their own and Jayne had to fend for them. No one helped him to save/take care of them so he doesn't understand the idea that it would be reasonable to expect people ( not of her family) to be patient with or take care of River. It's just out of his range of experience.

I think Adam's a great actor who did a lot with a character that could easily have become a dumb thug. Adam gave him humor, kindness, and an underlying sweetness that keeps Jayne from being a one dimensional jerk:)

Briefly hijaking the thread - hublest apologies.

Okay, a boob I can get behind - although Mal and Jayne have their fair share of boobish moments too. (Not Wash though... just realised that... funny that the goofiest guy is the most comfortable with women) but a coward??? C'mon!

Even leaving aside the fact that he obviously spent years of pain and heartache trying to rescue his sister, and the fact that he gave up everything - even his family - to get her back, Simon has shown plenty of courage.

He's stood up to both Mal and Jayne many times. Men that are much bigger and much tougher than he is - and usually armed to boot. Heck, he's even punched Mal in the face! In Bushwhacked he was terrified of going for a spacewalk, but he put on the suit and did it anyway, for no other reason than there was a chance some stranger on the ghost ship might need a doctor. Not only that, but when even Jayne baulked at the thought of handling the reavers' victims, Simon volunteered, calmly explaining that bodies didn't scare him.

In Safe he was prepared to burn to death by River's side rather than let her die alone, taking the awful chance that maybe, just maybe, they might not kill their new found doctor. In Jaynestown he refused to tell Stitch where Jayne was, even though the guy started threatening to tear his eye out. He doesn't even like Jayne, but he still didn't blurt out what he knew. In Out of Gas he was one of the few people who didn't panic at the awful situation the crew were in, even though he knew better than anyone what a terrible death they were facing. He just took care of Zoe as best he could and let the others try to fix the problem. He volunteered to help rescue Mal from Niska when he can barely even shoot straight. He also delivered a baby in the middle of a shootout during 'Heart of Gold', once again calmly doing his job in the scariest of situations. Those are just the examples I can think of off the top of my head.

Simon? A coward? Gettoutahere!

Wash- keeping calm while piloting through all manner of disasters and joking to lighten the tension. Plus always ready to defend.

Jayne- dives right in and will fight to the death.
