For the few people who are and were interested in seeing this, this is a lesson plan on stranger Safety I was writing. Now lets hope I can handle a class of third graders to teach this The formatting got a little messed up transfering it here but it's still readable. Tell me what you think.

Health Education Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Stranger Safety
Grade Level: 3

Goal(s) or Essential Question(s): The goal of this lesson is to teach the children about strangers and how to avoid potential dangerous situations.

Learning Objectives:

The students will practice what to do if they encounter a stranger, in different scenarios.

The student will identify the basic principles of what a stranger is and who they are and where they might encounter them.

Core Content Standards:

21 Topic: Violence Prevention
Standard: Identifies threats to personal safety

National Health Education Standards:

Standard 4 – Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

Materials/Resources:

The Berenstain Bears and the Trouble with Strangers by Stan and Jan Berenstain

Big Post it Sheet

Procedure for Teaching:

Motivation/Introduction:

“Hello Everyone, Today we are going to learn a little bit about strangers. Can anyone tell me what a stranger is?”

“Strangers look like you and me. They don’t look like aliens or monsters. They can be young, old, a man, or a woman. A stranger is simply anyone you don’t know.”

“I want you to think of some things you should do and some things you should not do when meeting a stranger while I read you a story.”

Body:

1. The teacher will read the story The Berenstain Bears Learn About Strangers to the class.

2. The class and students will discuss strangers, What the students already know and what they have been taught by their parents. Then have the students come up with a list of rules for dealing with strangers. The teacher will write these rules on a sheet of big post-it.

“What were some rules the bear family had about strangers?”

“What do you think Brother and Sister bear had to think about at the end of the story?”

“Do you think there are good strangers? Who are some good strangers?”

“Has anyone had an experience where they’ve encountered a stranger? What Happened?”

“What are some rules for dealing with strangers?”

3. The class will role play different scenarios that could happen when meeting a stranger. For each scenario the teacher will first explain the situation then choose a small group of children and give each of them a part. After each scenario is played out the class will discuss what happened in each, what the child did right, wrong, and what the child could have done in each.

You're playing outside with your friends. An adult you don't know asks for directions to a nearby store.

A neighbor is walking his dog. He sees you playing outside and asks if you want to walk the dog with him.

As you're walking home from school, you notice an adult you don't know following you.

On your way home from school you see an adult you know. She asks if you want to go get some ice cream and then she will drive you home.

4. The teacher will hand out the community helpers worksheet for homework.

Closure:

“It’s important to remember that not all strangers are bad in fact most are good, but because you can’t tell which strangers are bad and which strangers are good it is important to know some other rules to keep you safe.

Be aware of dangerous situations
Trust your instincts
Know what to do
Ask your parents first
Stick with friends

Student Product: The students will complete the Identifying Safe Strangers worksheet http://www.mcgruff.org/files/commhelpers.pdf,
The Stranger Safety Worksheet https://www.thesafeside.com/Common/Documents/TheSafeSide_ClassroomDisc
ussion.pdf

Assessment:

Observation of the Role Plays
Class discussion over what was learned.
Who are some safe strangers?
What are the rules you should follow if you meet a stranger?
What was an important thing to do
Orally we will go over the Stranger Safety true/false worksheet.

Extension/Remediation:
Extension: The children will write a story on someone meeting a stranger.
Remediation: The children will go over the rules again and go through one of the scenarios step by step. They will then write a paragraph over what they have learned.

Modification:
For those students with special needs the scenarios would be more scripted, the students and teacher would discuss the scenario as it was going on and have the class direct what is going on.

Reflection: To be written after the teaching of the lesson
