What worked and didn’t work in Angel season 5

What Worked -

Hamilton
Arrogant. Smug. Polished. Articulate. Unashamedly evil. Ruthless (when necessary). Supremely confident of his power (and that of his masters). Only villain of the series who literally looked down at Angel. Nailed Harmony (lucky bastard). And give him props--he looked fantastic in a suit. I’ve just given you ten reasons why Adam Baldwin’s Hamilton was a great villain and the perfect liaison to the Senior Partners. That’s about ten more than I’d give Sarah Thompson’s Eve.

The entire article is a great read, though some stuff of course you may have a drastically differing opinion of, for me this was the case with 'THE CAUTIONARY TALE OF NUMERO CINCO' being ranked 9 out of 10. Am I the only one who was iffy about this ep? Maybe I just need to see it again or something. Oh, but the reviewer was dead on about EVE. (I included this below for good measure) You can read the entire article here at:

http://www.buffy.nu/article.php3?id_article=4936

So anyway, this article got me thinking about us Angelus Arcanumites offering out our own ranking of each ep of Season 5, see how much we agree or disagree with each other and other reviewers. I'm not going to waste a thread on it unless others feel they want to participate, besides, this I need to reflect on for a while.

What Didn't Work - Eve
Oh dear god, what a disaster. Eve was the first Joss Whedon character I would classify as Dead Weight. No chemistry with Angel. No chemistry with the main cast, not even Marsters, who can spark with anybody. No chemistry with Christian Kane (which I thought was biologically impossible for human females); their love scenes made me long for Angel/Lindsey slash. Not likable, which is OK for a villain, but: Not clever. Not sexy. Not ruthless. Not intelligent. Not intimidating. Smug, yet wimpy--a bad combination. The only times I felt good about Eve on screen was when Cordy was insulting her, Gunn was strangling her, and Harmony was beating the crap out of her. Otherwise, I just wanted her off my screen as soon as possible. To paraphrase Ilona: "Eve? Ptui! We will speak no more of her!"

Cautionary Tale is a love it/hate it episode I think. In SFX magazine it was given 1 star out of 5 by one reviewer while another one raved about it. Personally I thought it was good but the story slightly mishandled. As for a rankings thread - there's no such thing as wasting a thread ;) You'll get at least one reply :)

I couldn't agree more with the summaries of Hamilton and Eve. Eve... what a waste of airtime. Thanks for sharing that.

Ranking the eps would be fun, although I missed two eps due to basketball and some weird WB blue screen during the whole show.

Being a hero doesn't mean you succeed in saving the day.... it just means you tried.

VERACOBB

Die Eve, die!
Hamilton should have been the liason from the beginning. Not her. Hell, Yosafbridge would have been a better liason. But Hamilton looks much better in a suit than she would.

And Numero Cinco definitely not my favourite ep. In fact, I'd say it's my least favourite ep out of all episodes of Buffy, Angel and Firefly. As my friend put it 'I could quite happily go without seeing that episode ever again in my life.' (This from people who generally rewatch every ep 3-4 times the week after it airs.)

I remember really liking the dynamics between the main characters in the ep, but I didn't give a good gorram for Numero Cinco or his story. And the whole Angel brooding about his heart thing...*yawn* I'm over it. And once again some demony thing, had to destroy some all powerful thingy-ma-bob and can I go watch Jaynestown now?
*sigh* I really expected more from Jeff Bell.
But I guess they can't all be perfect all the time.
I think even Joss went a little off his trolley with Fred's death scene in Hole in the World.
Though nobody ever saw me write/say that.

JELLO

So many Eve-haters out there. It's amazing. I, honestly, didn't mind having her. Granted she's no Lilah. Lilah was awesome at what she did, but Eve looked so much prettier than her. The thing I didn't like was that whole Eve/Lindsay thing. It seemed as if they just put the brillant Christian Kane with her just to give her a little more to do on the show.
Adam has Hamilton was great. His introduction in Underneath was superb. When he enters the lobby of W&H and just kills that guy was funny as hell, and got even funnier when all he wanted was Eve's John Hancock. His appearance at the end of an already awesome season was more than appreciated.
And Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco was alright. It had some pretty funny ass stuff in it. I liked it a whole lot better than Life of the Party, which was funny too, but the ending with the UberLorne pissed me off beyond belief. The was the worst thing I've seen on a Joss Whedon show since the cave guys in Buffy's Beer Bad.

*Amy Acker deserves an Emmy for her work as Fred this season. That was phenomenal work she did. She had me sobbing like a 4-year-old girl. My girlfriend questioned my sexual orientation many a time.

If memory serves, wasn't Morena Baccarin originally slated to play Eve? Morena has more charisma and presence in her left pinky toenail than the woman who ended up playing Eve did. This isn't a slight to that actress, it is a supreme compliment to MB. MB could have had us groveling before Eve, and I think it's really (if the story I heard is true) a case of not having quite the right person in place.

Jayne: "You got yourself lookin' mighty hideous!"

Absolutely. If only we were in charge of giving out those stupid awards.... Unfortunately, Amy probably won't even get a nomination because she doesn't play a doctor or lawyer on one of the standard, boring network shows.

But you're right. Her acting this season was some of the best I've seen by any actor... well... ever.

I was convinced she deserved an Emmy or Golden Globe after the episode 'The Girl In Question' when she is switching back and forth from Fred to Illyria to Fred....I was amazed at how she was able to so completely capture each character without the need of costume to convince us. And Fred's death scene in AHITW, and Wes' because Amy's acting in NFA, simply WOW. And no one outside the realm of sci-fi fantasy tv will ever know. Now how fair is that?
