Today Brian Lynch's 'Angel: After the Fall' came out,
the canon sequel to the TV show, based on Joss' outline....

DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED, WE WANT TO DISCUSS THE COMIC BOOK HERE

(oh, and it kicks ass, so get your copy ASAP and then come and discuss it too!)

OMG I was unspoiled and I was shocked, amazed, and thrilled to see Wesley! Yay! Wesley!
I couldn't believe it - I am so happy!

And Gun, tragic terrifying Gunn! Wow! Fun!

Sorry about the squealing, but I am thrilled, and excited, I love the art work and I think that Brian has gotten this off to a really exciting start

I wasn't blown away - blown away. Though part of that is because I'm not sure I caught all of what was going on so I'll need to re-read before I pass judgment I suppose. Though I can say right up front that I don't like the way IDW seems to use the same stiff glossy stock for their interiors as their covers. I prefer something more traditionally paperlike for the interiors.

Have you looked at any of Brian Lynch's Spike books?
You ARE a Spike fan, right?!
It was Lynch's Spike: Asylum that led Joss to believe that it would be possible to do the continuation of Angel... because Lynch got Spike's voice so completely right, and Franco Urru's art was awesome.

So to get to your question: The artwork is very different from the Buffy artwork, but personally I love it just as much... in fact I love it more for the darker/edgier Angel-verse.

It is really fun to see the fang gang back in such horrible and painful ways.... (okay, I have a twisted sense of fun, sue me).

Finally got my copy, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I admit, I wasn't expecting much. Even tho it's longer than a normal comic (27 pages by my count, compared to the regular 22), it still seemed like they packed a ton of story into this issue. The art style really seems to fit, too. The characters don't necessarily bear a great resemblance to the actors, but what the heck--at least you can tell who they're supposed to be (Nina's the only one who I needed the text to figure out).

And best of all--no ads!! I hope that's something that they're going to keep doing, and it's not just some special dealio for the first issue...

IDW always uses heavier paper and no ads...
it is partly why they charge a little more
(they are also smaller and poorer, so they need to charge a little more... when they turn into a bigger publishing company they may be able to bring their per issue down a little)

I agree that it was hard to figure out Nina, but I kind of love that she is around and going through some wolfy confusion because of the Sun/Moon confusion....

Not bad, though they copied Heroes a little in that we're not seeing what happened just after the end of the last season...

And I have trouble combining the ideas of a wasted LA and Buffy not being there to help out...oh well, they're separate realities, I guess, due to separate companies handling them.

Great art Chrisisall

Well, there was a mention of something about a "barrier", so that could have something to do with it. If Angel and co. could get out and get home, I'm sure they would, so it might be just as impossible for Buffy or anyone to find a way to get in and help them.

And then there's the question of, don't you think a lot of people would notice if LA just suddenly disappeared off the face of the earth? So maybe the Senior Partners worked some kind of glamour that hides what they've done. Maybe Buffy and the rest don't even know that anything's wrong...

I do try.

Re-reading your last post tho, I just wanted to make sure that you realized that it's not just that W&H has lain waste to LA, and put up a barrier to prevent Angel and his friends from escaping, and others from getting in and helping. The Senior Partners have apparently sent the entire city to a hell dimension (which is why the sun and moon are both out at the same time). The concept of which instantly got me wondering, "Okay, so what's occupying the space back in 'our' world that LA had been sitting on?" Either it's some kind of glamour, like I said, to keep anyone from even noticing (especially Buffy and the slayers)... or that's just a plothole that never even occurred to them (Brian Lynch and Joss)...

Yes, it was Gunn... living his own worst nightmare...
if we can call it 'living'

Come to think of it, Wesley is ALSO stuck in his worst nightmare....

and by sending LA to hell Angel is pretty much living HIS worst nightmare too!

It is full of possibilities (admittedly dark scary possibilities)!

I think Groo is right: there will be explanations which tie Buffy's world to Angel's hell...
not because they will necessarily do any cross-overs but because Joss is over-seeing both stories and he will find a way to make sense of them..... sooner or later.

it is only 10:30 here on the West coast...

and yes, THAT is the real charm of comics:
you get to have giant Dawn,
and you get to have a telepathic fish named Betta-George,
you are never limited by budget concerns, or by interference from the network,
you are limited only by the imaginations of your writers...
and they have VERY unlimited imaginations!

So far it appears that they are going in a VERY different direction with the gang. I am anxious to see if they do any crossovers.

From what I've gathered there are no cross-overs planned because both story-lines have been plotted and contain their own complicated arc....
but that cross-overs CAN happen if it becomes too irresistible (ie Joss has the power to do what he wants: Dark Horse and IDW wouldn't give him a hard time if a character did wander into the other's realm)

I was pretty thrilled to see that the loan shark had gotten out of Sunnydale before it became a crater, and moved down to LA just in time for it to be sucked into Hell....

In fact I would go for a spin off comic telling us what the Shark has been up to, and if he knows Betta George.... hmmmm

The revelation about Angel REALLY blew my mind...
and when you add Gunn's tragic situation (and how scary he has become), this comic has really gotten my on the edge of my seat!

Yeah, waiting a month is hard, but I am definitely having fun with this

Enjoying it so far and it's nice to see while there is a lot of bad blood around, they've also changed Connor and Angel's relationship to a more positive one, especially after the season finale.

Of course, the final panel of issue 3 is a heck of a way to reveal a prophecy fulfilled, no?

The last page of three literally took my breath away. God, I haven't been surprised like that since Serenity. It just reminded me how much I miss having Joss on TV, because--and I know this was Lynch's idea, so major props to him--nothing on TV has shocked me the way Buffy/Angel used to since. It was so nice to have that feeling once again.

yeah, I was really stunned, I didn't see this coming at all
(I'm so glad I was unspoiled)

Everyone else from the team is experiencing their worst nightmare,
while Angel gets his greatest wish, at the worst possible time!
This is really exciting, creating all kinds of tension and conflict.
I am VERY excited about this comic book series!

If you go perusing some of the forums at various sites, everyone seems so convinced that that line means he's now human. After a week of thinking it over, I'm not so sure, and wouldn't be surprised to find there's some other twist we're not expecting.

I can only come up with two ways the 'human' angle works. 1) The Shanshu prophecy... except he signed that away in NFA. I always thought that was kinda weird, that you could sign away a prophecy as tho it were a simple contract, but if we accept that scene at face-value, then the Shanshu is out. And 2) The Senior Partners did it to him as punishment for taking down the Black Thorn. Except why would they punish him by giving him the very thing he'd spent five years fighting for? Unless they included a bonus free gift along with the new humanity, like syphilis or liver cancer...

Well someone at Whedonesque mentioned that it WAS weird that anyone in the Black Thorne had the power to do anything to make Angel sign away a prophecy of a gift that would come from The Powers That Be.... so maybe that whole contract was bogus to begin with, and was just done to test Angel....

Because there is often nothing worse than getting what you wish for!
Angel's dearest wish was to be human, but he rejected it back in his first season because it kept him from being strong enough to fight with Buffy and fulfill his need to do good....
and here he is in Hell, sending ALL his friends to hell, even his own son, back to hell...
And NOW he's human? Now he really needs to be strong as possible....

But of course I don't know... As you pointed out, Brian Lynch didn't say human. We'll have to wait and see!

In the latest podcast Q&A session, Brian Lynch referred to Angel as human a couple times, I believe. Could've been a classic misdirect, I suppose, but he also said this was the idea he emailed Joss with and expected to get a, "You're an idiot" reply, but was instead met with major enthusiasm.

I'm thinking it's Shanshu, and the signing-it-away stuff was just a test from the Black Thorn, counting on Angel's not knowing that you can't sign away a prophecy.

So, I finally got my copy of ATF #4 today. Can you believe they brought back Groo? What the hell? Who wanted to see that freak again?

Anyway, while that was great, the rest of the issue was fairly average, IMO, much like issue #2. A lot of exposition and setting things up, but not much actually happening. Hopefully #5 will get back to the awesomeness of #1 and #3...

Pah! Don't say anything about #5 yet! I won't have mine 'til at least Friday, maybe even early next week! They seem to be lagging a bit shipping my order this month.

But yeah, I did like #4--especially after I went back and re-read it a couple of times. I just didn't think it was as good as #3, which rocked hard... mainly because of Spike/Illyria, and the big dragon fight. #4 just had a little too much exposition, and not enough action. Which I don't mind, because exposition and character development are important, too, and I'm glad that on both "Buffy" and "Angel", they're willing to devote entire issues to it, and not just try to make each issue a great big fight scene every month.
