I was curious what people thought about the talking hamburger representing the mystical being "The Loa" on Angel.

Select to view spoiler:

The Loa tells Wes that the prophecy is true, that Angel will kill his son even though we find out later that the prophecy was planted by Sahjan in an effort to nullify another prophecy stating that Angel's son will kill Sahjan. The Loa even tells Wes to watch for the signs: earthquake, followed by fire, followed by the sky turning to blood all of which happen in rapid succession. My question is was the Loa in league with Sahjan or just mislead into thinking the prophecy was valid? Was the prediction of the earthquake, fire and blood just a lucky guess or did it mean something else? Or, was this whole sequence just a means to have a talking hamburger on the show?

GROUNDED

You can look it either way.

As far as I'm aware, it's never addressed in the series and the Loa never comes up again. To be honest, it doesn't really matter does it? Both explanations are sensible so I suppose you can pick whichever one you prefer :)

While Grounded may be right, I think the writers were actually being more specific in a way to tie in to the theme of the season.

The Loa is another example of the misleading prophecies that plague the Buffyverse. It doesn’t actually say that Angel will kill his son, it says “That the vampire will devour his child is certain.” And that happens, because Angel is being fed Connor’s blood; “devouring” him. So the Loa is very specifically telling the truth, but Wesley misinterprets it to mean that Angel will kill Connor. So, while the Loa’s answer can be seen as deliberately misleading, it did not actually lie to Wesley and all its predictions did come true. Ultimately, it just goes to show that you can’t trust prophecy in the Buffyverse, because even when it’s true, it’s true in a different way than you thought.
