What makes one vamp 'stronger', more evil than the next ?

Aside from say, Angel or Spike - main characters - needing to be better, stronger fighters than your average vampire, is there any thing remarkable that sets them apart from any others ? I mean, Angelus and Darla were legendary for the havock the wrought. But why? How'd they get to be so bad ass?

GROUNDED

It's been mentioned a few times that age plays a factor. All the big vampire characters have been alive for long periods of time.

I've wondered that too. I mean sometimes Buffy takes on 4 vamps at once and has no problem. Other times just one can trip her up. It's very odd.

I've always just made up my own theory that it's the strength of someone's will or something. Maybe the stronger people are able to be host to more powerful demons.

It could also be lineage. Like a few very powerful vampires pass on very powerful traits to their "offspring". Considering Darla, Angel, Dru and Spike all come from the Master's line they could all be very powerful. Where other vampires with a lesser ancestory are weaker?

Age would make sense, of sorts. But I recall Spike dusting one 'ancient' vamp with little or no problem ( I think it was the WW2 ep, where Spike was on the NAZI sub ) And then there's the lineage thing. Darla was sired by a/the Master. She then sired Angel, who sired...*Drusilla? who sired Spike. I think I have that right. *Drusilla referred to Angel as 'father', as I recall.

*edit - apologies folks. I was typing w/ a brain cramp, and MEANT Angel sired Drusilla.

Hmm, dunno where you get Angel siring Darla from. And it was Drusilla who sired Spike.

But are they stronger because they've been undead longer or have they survived for longer because they're stronger

Maybe it's something to do with the humanity that's left in the vampire? I mean Spike's obviously more human than many vampires. Or how evil they were when they were alive like that vampire from Helpless who was a killer when he was alive. Giles said that no trace of the human is left but the vampires could be shaped by the memories of the human life that they still have.

Also I think the Master's lineage is important.

I think a big part of it is how intelligent the vampire is. The run of the mill, "Grr. Arg. Kill." vamps tend to get dusted pretty quickly. The ones who bother to have a plan do better. Intelligence also play a roll in how evil a vampire is perceived to be. Just straight out killing: not so evil. Plenty of human beings do it all the time. But targeting your victim and torturing them psychologically before you kill them: much more evil. And getting off on seeing your victim's torment: evilest.

The "the human is gone, it's just a demon with a human's memories" always seemed like such Watcher claptrap to me so I never really believed it. If that's true, it doesn't really matter because the vampires are so HUGELY influenced by their human lives. Spike is the biggest example of that because of his touchy-feelyness even when soulless, but obviously Drusilla as well. She was tortured to insanity as a human so that it would carry over into her unlife. Plus she was a precog when she was a human. And Angelus wouldn't have been so evil if Liam wasn't a frat boy with major daddy issues.

But personally, I just think Watchers said that because they don't want their slayers to get attached to vampires.

I hadn't ever really thought about that. Very interesting.

I pretty much agree with the theories already stated. It's probably largely lineage and age, but I believe the strength of will of the human makes a large difference. Spike wasn't particularly intelligent, but he sure believed in will.

I'll always love the bit in Angel season 5 where Spike and Angel were talking about their vampire selves and what fueled them. Spike was all about the fight, and the kill, and Angel was more refined and evil. Dru's craziness obviously stuck, and we never really do get a sense of Darla pre-vamping - just that one scene of her in bed dying of VD.
