Nathan Fillion cast in new ABC pilot
BIGRICHARD

Yay! First post! Anyway, on with the news:
"Firefly vet Nathan Fillion has been cast in the new ABC dramedy Castle to play a mystery author who helps the NYPD solve crimes. Fillion also recurs on Desperate Housewives and starred in the short-lived Drive." - http://www.tv.com/story/11210.html
Sounds intriguing, and I think since Fillion is good at both the drama and the comedy, a dramedy suits him well.
The TV.com page for Castle has the synopsis: "ABC Studios and Beacon television are producing this police drama in which the NYPD's homicide department is helped out by a writer of horror novels."
Certainly sounds interesting, but I suppose only time will tell if it has a good enough twist over all the other police dramas...
I'm just glad to see Nathan back on the TV, since I don't watch Desperate Housewives.
What do we think?
edit: thanks yinyang, I changed it to just the link.

I've never been huge on police dramas. I only watch a couple myself but I'll be giving this one a shot. Nate is a BDH and as such is an automatic must see. Or atleast try to see. I'm hoping they do more than just try for a standard Crime Drama with a twist and cast some great folks beside him.

I'm betting the title for this at the pitch meeting was, "Murder He F***ing Wrote." Anyway it has the captain so I'm watchin'. Maybe it'll even be good.

While I'm always delighted to see old Browncoats getting work, I'd far rather that Nathan was cast in Serenity 2 or :sigh: Firefly season 2.

Wrong network sadly. Plus, forensic pathology not so funny. Funny being the medy part of dramedy.

HURRAY!!! I so want to see Nathan on the TV screen for more than 3 minutes an episode. He definitely should be the main star of a show. Dramedy sounds like something that would be right up his ally.

Is he a horror or mystery writer? I just posted the same news over on Shiny Universe and referenced a Zap2It article that says he is a mystery writer.

I did notice the mystery/horror thing. If you haven't noticed, in my post alone, with the news excerpt and the synopsis of the show, both are mentioned, so I have no idea. Mind you, at least this show isn't on Fox. After FF and Drive, I don't trust them with Cap'n Tightpants.

No point in watching him on Desperate Housewives unless you are only satisfied with the "eye-candy" factor .He was not given the opportunity to really flex his acting muscle...disappointing really...though I know quite alot of women who are new Firefly/Serenity fans because of his brief appearances on DH,and they have subsequently influenced others to be fans (ie their spouses, kids siblings friends etc.) so I guess that's a positive. Hope this new series doesn't sink to the black murky depths of the cancellation ocean.

Yeah, Nathan is always a pleasure to watch and will usually steal whatever scene he's in. I couldn't bring myself to watch Desperate Housewives....it's just too bad (shudders at the thought). What I've seen of that piece of go-se always reminds me of Joey from Friends explaining the way you do soap acting, but with DH it isn't funny.
I'll be watching this though and I hope they make it different enough from Murder She Wrote so that it stands on it's own and doesn't get bogged down by the inevitable comparisons.
But he definitely needs more lead roles. Hopefully this is another step in the right direction.

At least we all know what the cast of Firefly is capable of. It breaks my heart when I see them appear on TV in parts that don't do them any justice, supporting actors that have no ability. Eg. poor Gena in "Standoff" The two leads in that are excruciating to watch..I actually chipped a tooth during the second and last episode of the show that I let myself watch. I was grinding my teeth with frustration. I actually do watch Desperate Housewives...they are all so effortlessly flawed, and even though I alternatively wince at and am amused at their antics. Alan Tudyk seems to have done alright since Firefly/Serenity. His part in CSI as an evil Pedophile was chillingly effective, and more of my friends have gotten into Firefly because they thought he was so good in Death at a Funeral. Also managed to rope some male friends into the verse due to their appreciation of Summer, in the sarah Connor Chronicles...so again the crappy TV is not all bad if it promotes a wider appreciation of Firefly...it may have to come back, as it's becoming better loved globally.

Sounds like his movie 'The Water's Edge' which was meant to be a drama but really turned out to be more of a comedy.
In that movie he plays a writer as well and ends up solving a mystery while killing half the people in town.
The fight scene at the end of the movie has to be seen to be believed, its positively idiotic. Still I enjoyed Nathan's acting and he is main character in that movie.
Plus he does get shot in the arm just like in Serenity the Pilot episode.

Well, I don't promise fun like Slither. It is just kind of a silly "evil small town" thriller in which Nathan steals the show with his acting and (OK, I'll just say it) sexiness.

Hi, Vet! Good to see you here. There've been a load of "Murder, He Wrote" jokes. And "Castle" really being "King."
We can just hope there are opportunities for the lovely Fillion snark, the lovely Fillion doofusness, the lovely Fillion slanty gunbelt STOPSTOPSTOP {no gunbelts allowed in NY-based premise} a little paw-porn here and there, and the occasional deserving female to receive the lovely Fillion attention. Would be just ironic to cast Morena, Jewel, Summer, or Gina in guest spots. Or all of them. At once. He heeeeeee!

ugh! WATER'S EDGE! Daniel Baldwin as one of the mains in a movie is usually a pretty clear indication of the quality of the film. Nathan Fillion is great of course...considering the relative crappiness of the material he has to work with. I found "White noise the light" difficult to watch too. Though most of the actors did a great job, some of the ideas could have been better developed...I suppose actors have to take what they can get work wise if they don't have a regular gig....kind of like the rest of us.

What's your best guesses for the obligatory Firefly reference subtly embedded in the pilot for our collective amusement?
Put me down for a dialogue reference: 'Don't be a big damn hero' or variation thereof.

It's good to see Nathan in demand, he more than deserves it.
How are our other favorite Crew members (ie, ALL of them) doing? I know about Summer and the SC Chronicles and I saw Morena and Adam in the Sands of Oblivion (on the respectable side of shadiness only because of their acting)...but I haven't heard anything about the rest.

Am i the only one who thinks this sounds like utter crap? Nathan's an awesome actor and all, but even that won't save a programme that sounds this bad. And the pictures look so... perfect. Like too perfect. And they compare it to Moonlighting, which says it all. It's being made several decades too late.
So sorry, I haven't been able to keep up with the media on this, so I'm not sure what measure of crap it is, utter or otherwise.
Moonlighting was utter crap. That I will agree with. However, whoever compared it to Castle probably wasn't taking that into consideration at all. I'd say it was likely meant to appeal to the demographic that was attracted to Moonlighting - that being the less discriminate female 24-35 demographic who were probably attracted to the main character... um... what's his name, and actually liked the show. Hard to believe, I know, but they're out there.
But again, I haven't been keeping up with the media.
One thing about being a Firefly fan, you should know to not judge a series by its media, which is geared toward the bottom line, not quality. Had we all judged Firefly by its media, this site wouldn't even exist.
I would submit that utter crap is strictly in the eye of the beholder. I mean there are obviously people who like Desparate Housewives, right?

Thanks for the advice. I'd never say Nathan made a bad career choice, if it's what he wants to do. And regardless of whether i end up liking Castle or not, i still wouldn't say no
I did have the advantage (/curse, depending on how you look at it) of first watching Firefly on dvd and was utterly won over instantly with the 'Serenity' pilot. I've given other shows a lot longer than 3 episodes; on some occasions it was more than worth it... on others, well, it's time i'll never get back. And there is at least one show (another that lasted only one series) i still haven't made my mind up on. I LOVE the idea of the show, the storylines are good, the characters have so much potential... but the acting is pretty bad and they needed better direction.
In conclusion, the world of television is a merky one. Who knows what you're going to get?

Television is merely advertising with bits of entertainment added to lure us in to watch the advertising.
Remember what I said about the bottom line?
See, this is how "all paranoid and crotchety" you get when you're a veteran from the Throes of Cancellation. The difference between me and most others around here is that I don't hold Fox personally responsible for anything. I have maintained my love-hate relationship with all networks at large because all networks are evil. Every single one is responsible for cancelling or torturing a program that I loved at one time or another. Started with Man From Atlantis on NBC when I was 12. They replaced it with Dallas.
ABC made the mistake of airing Galactica 1980, which is the reverse of cancelling, but it tarnished the whole genre for decades.
I just dated myself, didn't I?
Lately I've become a bit of a hypocrit, because I would much rather watch TV on DVD. I'm done with wrestling with rescheduling, stupid commercials that I have memorized in the first 20 minutes, and all that malarky. Gimme my program, gorramit!

And I'll still maintain that it's all advertising - even the programmes themselves have product placement from time to time. Just watch. Every time someone turns up with an iPod, or an Apple, or a Dell, that's advertising.
Paranoid... Crotchety... Well, and I am in the advertising business. I'm a graphic designer, so I know what viral advertising looks like.
