'A good episode, not as strong as the last one, but very entertaining. Interesting mix of serious material within a pretty silly concept.'

'"Jaynestown" is about what makes people heroes and what heroes mean to people. It is about hope and what hope can bring. It has a couple of clever and funny subplots too.'

'Jaynestown just may be the most hi-larious television episode in creation. The extent to which it will evoke laughs is almost unbearable, incredibly contagious, and at a ridiculously high level. Although a very high-spirited piece of television, the episode and a sharp edge that cannot be taken lightly.'

Anyone been able to find or capture that "Man named Jayne" song as an MP3? I would be interested in getting that if so.
http://still-flying.net/extras.php
Actually, yes. Try wavsite.com, they have it. And the theme song. And dozens of assorted quotes from each of the first half of the episodes.
I am pretty sure "The Ballad of Jayne Cobb" was written by Joss himself and not Greg Edmonson the shows composer but I can't find a credit or indication anywhere. ` Can anyone point me to the source of all musical knowledge in the Whedon 'verse?` ` Bonus question: Are you a "Whedonist"? and if you are, would you travel to a secluded island off Jamaca for a fun filled time of "Whedonism"? ` Funk & Wagnals never published twisted dictionary defines "Whedonist" as: Any person or group of people who are sexually deviant, twisted and generally easygoing. Plays well with others (heads).
What was the cargo that they picked up in Canton?
My DVD is messed up! how does this episode end????? The very end when they are taking of? This is driving me nuts. Does anybody know where I can find the end on the net, or could somebody tell me what was said? Thanks, Lauren

Below are speculations about events or items in the episode.  These speculations are subjective.
is River now out of shock, as said in the unaired pilot?
This episode seems to be the first sign we have in the series (as far as I've seen, excluding the pilot which I haven't that not only is Simon aware of Kaylee's attraction, but that it's reciprocated. Of course, they have a LONG road ahead of them....
Actually, she never was in shock, battier than ol' barn maybe but not from shock. I think what you're refering to is Simon's assertion to Mal not to open the box because if awakened prematurely, she could possibly be thrown into severe shock but the drugs he used to smuggle her out with seemed to work with no ill effects. I hope this answered your query. ` "When you can't run anymore, you crawl. And if you can't crawl, .. well .. you know the rest." ` `

Below are notes about events or items in the episode.
The Ballad of Jayne

He robbed from the rich
and gave to the poor
stood up to The Man
and gave him what for
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain
THE HERO OF MUDSORE!
THE MAN THEY CALL JAYNE!

Our Jayne saw the mudder's backs breaking
and he saw the mudders' laments
and he saw the President taking
every dollar an' leavin' five cents
so he said, 'can't do this to my people'
'can't crush them under your heel'
Jayne strapped on his hat,
and in ten seconds flat,
stole everythng there was fit to steal--
THE HERO OF MUDSORE!
THE MAN THEY CALL JAYNE!

And her's what separates heroes
from the common folk like you an' I
the man they call Jayne, turned 'round his plane
and let that money hit sky
he dropped it onto our houses
he dropped it into our yards
he dropped it onto our neighbors
one chunk hit Clem Meadows far hard
THE HERO OF MUDSORE!
THE MAN THEY CALL JAYNE!

Well Clem may now be a simpler man
than he mighta otherwise been
but he knows in his heart just like we do
Our Jayne is Mudshore's best friend...
THE HERO OF MUDSORE!
THE MAN THEY CALL JAYNE!

The Ballad of Jayne
from "Jaynestown"

Jayne.....
The man they call Jayne...

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And he gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne...

Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'
He saw the mudders' laments
And he saw the magistrate takin'
Every dollar and leavin' five cents
So he said "You can't do that to my people"
He said "Can't crush them under your heel"
Jayne strapped on his hat
And in 5 seconds flat
Stole everything Boss Higgins had to steal...

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And he gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne...

Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
The man they call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And let that money hit the skies
He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
The man they called Jayne
He stole away our pain
And headed out for the stars...

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And he gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne...

Updated 7 September 2004 after listening and listening!
After the bartender knocks the mug of Mudder's Milk out Jayne's hand, he says "Hero of Canton won't be drinking that (something in Chinese)", but in the captioning, he says "hero can't and won't be drinking that [chinese]". Close, and it still makes for a good line, but I like Hero of Canton better.
Nee How Ma!
Of the 9+ languages I speak, Chinese is by far the most difficult and when I write, I do so phonetically (Which technically all English speakers do but I don't read or write it and my spelling will be different due to the phonetic use) as I am not quite fluent.
The Chinese phrase the bartender uses, when he slaps the bottle from Jayne is,"Shung mow nyeow" which roughly translates to warm (fresh) Donkey piss, though it may be Ox, I have trouble with the syntax.
`
`As for The Ballad Of Jayne Cobb (A.K.A."The Man They Call Jayne") you were both off but Routier was the closest. Here are the actual lyrics with parenthesis around the (chorus and) subtitled words that deviate from the actual song and (...) means a pause, while a dash in the middle of a word means to carry it an extra beat.
As a musician, I spent literally years dissecting nearly unintelligible songs.

`If you wish to copy, just remove the bits you don't need {IE: ... --- (and)}.

Jeow Jen!
At the end of the ep, Jayne and Mal are leaning against a railing in the cargo hold on the level above the first flight of stairs up to the catwalks. That railing doesnt exist in other episiodes (that's where Mal and Inara sit at the end of Shindig, and where Simon thinks about attacking Jubal Early in OiS).
