Fanfic - jazz solo
Monday, June 8, 2009

From an article on fanfic in today's London's Evening Standard:

"It has the same relationship to the printed novel that a jazz solo does to sheet music". Makes it sound good, huh?

"It's outlaw territory: the Wild West of creative activity." Even better!

"It represents the inexorable growth of reader power and participation..It's like trade unionism in the late 19th century. One feels the consumers taking over the means of production." OOH! Impressive! And even more: "It's like the medieval ballad. What are the Robin Hood ballads and tales? Proto-fanfic."

Who would have thought it!

Fanfic writers are EXACTLY those musicians you see on the street corner. I love those guys! Those are the people who truly play for the music! :D

Just as well though, otherwise we'd just spend it all on booze and drugs and die before we were 30.

Accurate in many ways. Although I would point out that a fanfiction writer is more like a jazz musician who doesn't play for the pay.
