WONDERCON: Day 1
Friday, February 27, 2009

9:00 am: Wake up, don on Ninja Turtles shirtm Jayne-esque hat, Jeans, chucks, vest and homemade Browncoat messenger bag. Wash the plush Triceratops stays home because I didn't have time to run out and buy him his hawaiian shirt (he's sorta modest in public)

10:30: Running lateish to pick up badges, pack of nerds descends upon Dennys. Pancake Puppies taste like churros for breakfast

11:30: Pick up Con Badges, stand in line listening (and Singing) to Dr. Horrible with buddies. Excitement builds as it's my first Con ever (woot!).

12:00: Wondercon opens for business, I stray from the pack and score tons of swag.

1:00: Reach the Northern California Browncoats booth. Already picked up some stuff at other vendors, fork over the rest of my cash for a Jayne hat, swap hats and wear it proudly. Sorta wish I had Dino Wash, we woulda looked awesome together.

2:00: Leave to haul swag and various purchase up to the dorm.

3:15-5:15ish: Learn I was chosen to be interviewed to be an RA for school (lost my phone so I missed the call and I never got the conformation e-mail). Race seven blocks to get to the group interview just on time. Everyone else is dressed up, I'm wearing Jayne Cobb's hat. Think it went well though. Bummed I missed a storyboarding workshop with the storyboarders of Spongebob though.

5:15ish: Race back to Wondercon (only 3 blocks away) proceed to get lost looking for the Ballroom as they are showing the West Coast premiere of the animated Wonderwoman movie.

5:30: Find the ballroom and a friend with two other people. The two other people are storyboard majors! We all realize how rare it is to have 3 storyboard majors in the room so we proceed to nerd out and become buddies.

6:15: The Wonderwoman event starts. Host says that a certain someone wanted to come but wasn't able to make it, but the person wanted to send a greeting via vid. He then says 'He's the voice of Steve Trevor, but he's better known as Joss Whedon's Sexiest Muse'. The room erupts into cheers and clapping, I'm in the third row from the front of a giant screen, yelling my head off. Nathan says hi via vid and proceeds to make a joke about how he can't come because he's busy working on Serenity 2, the room then goes 'Awwwwww' at the tease. He then explains his excitement about the movie, says goodbye, and the movie starts.

7:30ish: Movie ends, it's fucking epic. Storyboarding animation majors nerd out as credits role, we're all gonna buy the special edition. We also hope they have some of the animatics on the special features.

8:00: Panel ends, it was pretty good, great to listen to Bruce Timm and Lauren Montgomery (animation peeps). We all head across the street to the Metreon. We all eat, because you don't eat at Wondercon, and proceed to talk Pokemon, Battlestar Galactica, Disney, Pixar, Joss and Firefly. One of my new buddies loves the fact I went to an interview with Jayne's hat.

9:30ish: Buddies won a raffle to get tickets to see Watchmen at midnight in the Metreon's IMAX theatre, I did not. Exchange phone numbers with storyboarding buddies and leave.

9:45: Pass out some swag to roommates, tell them they're seriously missing out. One friend (only firefly fan of the lot) spazzes over the fact I got a Jayne hat, and proceeds to hug me to death as I wear it. Posters are put up: Superman, Flash and Attack of the Show on my amoire, Coraline in the common area, Batman is over my bed, flanked by Kirk and Spock on each side. I explain to my friends, Luke and Hans would be totally better, but the best of all would be Mal and Zoe. Eyes roll. Then I explain what exactly a Jayne hat is to a confused roommate.

Prediction: I'll probably be in debt my tomorrow night (so many pretties I must have) but I'm having a hell of a time.
