I just watched the Jaynestown episode. Jayne makes a good small town hero. And he kicks ass too.

JAYTEE

I think by the end of the series Jayne had changed quite a bit. At the beginning he might have sold out the Captain and crew for the right price but after the Ariel incident he started changing. By the time the BDM comes around you can see him showing sincere concern for others in the crew like when kneels over River on Lilac the concern on his face is clear. His unhesitating respones to a vague command from the Captain and rushes to comply in the part where he's trying to hold his balance while making sure the others are strapped in while the ship is spinning out of control displays his newly won dedication. Plus there's a moment where he says, "Shepherd Book once told me, If you can't do something smart, do something right." and then he slides the bottle he's drinking over to Simon. Simon! Who Jayne has had an adversarial relationship for most of the series. I think he changed over time. He always had it in him to be a good person, while living a hard life and doing things he might not have wanted to survive but I think being on Serenity working for Mal gave him the opportunity to win back the better side of his humanity. (While still being a kickass merc you wouldn't wanna tussle with)
