British Comedy Brightens the Day

Monty Python was on TV the past week (Holy grail, meaning of life, the live performance, life of brian was probably aired too but I missed it).

*Sigh* The brits have perfected the art of silly. I am glad it is being kept alive with the likes of Little britain. Shame there isn't more Yes Minister (cerebral) brit humour around. Black books has a brain, but no real social commentary (great to watch all the same). Dead ringers is hillarious (look up "Dead Ringers Bush" on youtube. Fan-bloody-tastic! I especially love the Bush & Blair joint press conference)

And those that are yet to see "Red Dwarf" find it! Watch it! You'll LOVE it! I got out my red dwarf DVDs the other day after watching python on TV as I felt like more good british humour (although red dwarf is definitely a different style of brit humour to python).

I think I may have to dust off The Goodies dvds too, havent seen it in a while. Brilliant, brilliant show... but do I watch Kung-Fu Kapers (Ecky Thump!), South Africa (A great take on the stupidity of racism and aparteid) or Scatty Safari (The Existence of Rolf Harris) hehe, "it was the beards they were after".

Weekdays have their perks. Can't justify going out (have to go to work the next morning) but a couple of DVDs are entirely acceptable

It's not really surprising. British comedy has had years more to mature and adapt and develop subcultures than "colonial" comedy (and I am Canadian, so I am not trying to slang NA humour here;D). That and Joss worships British TV, so appreciatin' Britcom is appreciatin' Joss' sense of style;)

SHADESIREN


Have you seen "Spaced" or "Hyperdrive" yet? Both are rather funny (I like Spaced best). Both are being shown on BBC america now, I have them set on my DVR so I can catch up. Hyperdrive is reminiscent (IE: "VAGUELY reminds one of", not "very similair") of Red Dwarf (Dwarf is better) but I have to admit it makes me laugh. If you've seen Shaun of the dead, you'll see some great familiar faces.

RED DWARF!!! *gasp* And you can't forget Hitchhiker's Guide! (old BBC2 mini series and book) What is it about the Brits that produce believable, yet infinitely funny, sci fi? And funny sit-coms in general...

Oh, I forgot to mention Stephen Fry, very funny, great actor too (and witty if you ever catch any of his interveiws, v. sharp)!

I also decided most people would already know of Blackadder (the later series regularly feature both Fry and Laurie: Series 3&4). Funny stuff. I like the court-martial for the Pigeon Killer (that episode has a lot of Fry in it).

Prince (H. Laurie): "We are all English men here."
Blackadder (R. Atkinson, under his breath): "You're not you're German."

Or the inevitable: "I've got a cunning plan..."

Also not to be missed: Frye & Laurie sketches. Americans might be surprised that Hugh Laurie's British (the House accent is a fake!), but nobody should be surprised that he's very talented & screamingly funny, as is Stephen Fry. I laugh until I'm out of breath whenever I see these sketches. (You can find some of them on Youtube, too.)
